CHAMBER ACHIEVEMENTS
Consultation with Community Members
On January 27th, the Enderby & District Chamber of Commerce hosted a (semi-spontaneous)
meeting for concerned citizens about river conservation and safety. Those who attended came
from various parts of our community ranging from Mara to Mabel Lake. Also in attendance was a
representative of Safe Communities, who provided information on Riverwatch. Riverwatch is a
program designed to empower community members by providing the tools needed in order to
monitor safe and respectful river conduct and ensure that information is being communicated to
law enforcement when appropriate.

Feedback from this meeting will be used to determine the location of several signs on river safety
which will be installed this spring. A draft of a new brochure dedicated to tube floating safety and
routes was also reviewed at this meeting.

POLITICAL RADAR
BC Chamber Position on Federal Budget
The unveiling of the 2009 federal budget was encouraging for the BC Chamber of Commerce.
Many Chamber members will be pleased to see that their recommendations have been acted upon
in this budget. For instance, initiatives to improve access to credit, targeted investments in training,
expedited infrastructure spending, and taxation incentives for technology investments were
included in the budget.

Budget Notes
Premier Gordon Campbell announced infrastructure spending of close to $14 billion over the next
three years. Tourism, Culture, and the Arts Minister Bill Bennet announced a boost of $400,000 for
the 109 Visitor Centers in BC. Finance Minister Colin Hansen has introduced new legislation to
protect public services such as health and education while ensuring a return to balanced budgets
by the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

British Columbia’s economic presence in China has been strengthened by the opening of two trade
and investment offices in Beijing and Guangzhou. These offices, as well as the existing office in
Shanghai, work to promote BC as a destination for trade and investment and a leader in research
and development.
