She has many years of teaching experience and has been Resident Artist and Tutor at the BBC's Gardeners' World gardens at Barnsdale in Rutland for the past 7 years. Sandra teaches by demonstration and gives lots of individual help and encouragement. You will be pleasantly surprised by how much you can achieve in one day. Firstly, Sandra will show you how to make an accurate drawing of the flower from different angles; explaining how to foreshorten petals in order to ‘lift’ them from the page. After you have had a chance to sketch, the second demonstration will show how to use watercolours in a more fluid way, allowing them to mix wet into wet on the paper for a beautiful translucent effect. With tips on how to shape petals with every brushstroke, how to make them turn or overlap. You will never paint a flat petal again! The course is suitable for all abilities - beginners are also welcome. You may work at your own pace and spend the day as you please, either trying out samples of drawing and painting techniques or completing a finished study of the flower. No prior knowledge is required, and the qualification is equally suitable for those wishing to enter the profession or for dedicated amateurs. Examinations are offered twice a year in February and June. The RHS Level 3 Advanced Certificate and the Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture allow the advanced student to select a number of modules – four for the Advanced Certificate and a further four for the Diploma. Both qualifications involve the study of both theory and practical modules. The Master of Horticulture (RHS) is the premier qualification offered to horticulture professionals.
