      February, 2010

Dear Patrick Henry High Families:

As we begin a new calendar year, we also begin the articulation process of planning our instructional program for
the 2010-2011 school year. We have some very exciting additions to our course schedule:
• Introduction to Arts, Media, and Entertainment Management, for grade 9-12 students interested in the
management and production skills for our various performing arts events. This course complements our
    Theater Technology classes.
• On-line courses will be available for grade 11 and 12 students interested in taking English and social studies
through dual enrollment with iHigh. Students who have shown they can work independently, will take the
online course in our Credit Recovery Lab and will have a teacher mentor to support their learning.
• Additional CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) support classes for grade 9 and 10 students who
score below basic and far below basic on the California Standards Tests in English Language Arts and math.
Please encourage your student to achieve proficiency.
• We also have a group of teachers investigating a tutoring/advisory schedule to help provide more student
    supports in grades 9 & 10.

All parents need to be aware that our district is enforcing SB601 which requires students in grades 9 and 10 to
pass the Physical Fitness exam. Students in grade 10 who passed the fitness test in grade 9 will not have to retake
the exam. All grade 10 students who did not pass must take and pass the fitness exam to be exempt from P.E. in
grade 11. The fitness exam covers six standards and is given in March.

We have some important dates for parent events coming up:
• A.P. (Advanced Placement) Is For Everyone—February 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium
• Elective/Fine Arts Fair—February 18 at 5:00 p.m.in the Auditorium--followed by 9th Grade Articulation
Night at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium
• Justice 101 with Judge Link—March 23--at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium
• Parent Visitation Day—March 24, 8:00-11:00 a.m.; meet in the Library

Justice 101 with Judge Link is a follow up to our senior program in which Judge Link shares the realities of
today’s teen life and how to keep students safe and aware of the hazards of drug and alcohol use and ways to
avoid violence. It is important that every parent attend this special event on March 23 at 7:00 p.m. in our
auditorium. This is for parents only with a direct message for every parent. Spanish translation services will be
provided.

Last, we have such outstanding students who make us all proud with their achievements:
• Kellen Blumberg, Ryan Urie, and Eddie Ramos, recognized January 25 as All-CIF Athletes for fall semester.
• Victoria Maches and Renee Keven were selected as members of the La Jolla Playhouse Student Board of
    Trustees.
• Ann Tran is a winner of the San Carlos Library Contest and will compete in the San Diego City Competition.
• Jordanna Lang was selected to participate in the All-State Honor Band.
• Intel and the Society for Science & the Public have named Anna Simpson a Semifinalist in the 69th annual
    Science Talent Search.
• Kathryn Holt, Duyen Trang, and Eric Wittgrove have been chosen by Rotary Internation to attend the Rotary
Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Camp in April.
Thank you, parents for all your support and encouragement for our outstanding students and school.
Sincerely,

                        PHHS PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

PHHS has formed partnerships with 14 San Diego County companies/organizations. Our
partners provide wonderful opportunities for our students. The PHHS Partners in Education are:
San Diego Mesa College, East County YMCA, Kiwanis Club of Grantville-Allied Gardens, US
Navy, US Army, Mission Valley Rotary Club, Rick Engineering, Mission Times Courier, Chase
Bank – Lake Murray Branch, San Diego Film Commission, The San Carlos Library, Murray
Lampert Construction, San Diego State University Department of Geography/GeoTech and
Kyocera International. Businesses interested in becoming a Henry High School Partner in
Education – please contact Ms. Yvonne Walden, Employer Outreach Specialist, Patrick Henry
High School, (619) 286-7700 ext. 2233 or ywalden@sandi.net.

PHHS partners have been very active with the school! The Kiwanis of Granville-Allied
Gardens hosts a PHHS student of the month every month! This is a wonderful opportunity for
PHHS students to receive official recognition for their hard work!

The Mission Valley Rotary was successful in selecting 2 freshmen for their Rotary scholarship
program. This wonderful program has been in place at PHHS for several years. Students chosen
by the Rotary are taken under the Rotary wing throughout the duration of their high school
career. If the students successfully complete high school, they receive a scholarship from the
Rotary. The Rotary works with 8 students per year.

Rick Engineering, one of PHHS longest-standing partners, is very active once again this year
and can be seen all over campus! Rick Engineering provided 3 Engineering Academy students
with an all-day job shadow in November. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn
about what the largest civil engineering firm in San Diego does in their various departments.
Rick Engineering also has a staff member acting as a mentor for the PHHS ACE (Architecture,
Construction and Engineering) Mentoring program as well. ACE meets after school here at
Henry – 28 students are involved and 10 mentors from local engineering, architecture and
construction firms. Rick Engineering also continues to be a very active participant on the PHHS
Engineering Academy Advisory Board.

SDSU Department of Geography, a partner of the PHHS GIS class, developed a partnership
with GeoTech and we now have a 3-way partnership with SDSU Dept. of Geography and
GeoTech. The addition of GeoTech will allow our school to have access to more GIS
educational tools!

We greatly value the wonderful contributions our partners have made! Businesses interested in
becoming a Henry High School Partner in Education – please contact Ms. Yvonne Walden,
Employer Outreach Specialist, Patrick Henry High School, (619) 286-7700 ext. 2233 or

Academy), San Diego State University Department of Geography/GeoTech (partner of the
PHHS ROP/GIS class) and Kyocera International. We are looking forward to another
wonderful year!
Job Shadows:
Many students have been on job shadows already this semester! A job shadow allows a
student to see what a worker does on a day-to-day basis by shadowing an employee for 2-6
hours while that employee is performing his/her job duties. In that way, the student can
get more of a feel for whether that is a career that they would like to pursue. To date
this year, we have had students shadow an oral surgeon, a dentist, and more. Contact Mrs.
Walden if you would like more information.
Internships:
4 PHHS students are currently working in paid internships at Kaiser Permanente during
the school year. One student is currently involved in an internship at the Prado
Restaurant. This year, unpaid internships will be made available for ROP students in
graphic arts, engineering, GIS and digital electronics. Applications for summer internships
(SEAP, Marine Technology Society, and others) are now available. Watch the bulletin or
the website for more information!

January 2010

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Currently, all students in the San Diego Unified School District, grades 9 – 10, must receive 400 minutes
of physical education instruction every 10 school days. The state requires students to take 4 years of
physical education in high school. However, under a new state law, Senate Bill 601 (SB 601), a student
may be exempt from physical education in grades 11 and 12. The exemption is allowed only if the
student scores in the “Healthy Fitness Zone” for 5 out of the 6 areas assessed on the Physical Fitness Test
(PFT), also referred to as the FITNESSGRAM test.

In accordance with the new state law, Senate Bill 601, the San Diego Unified School District
implemented new requirements in August 2009, as follows:

Students that pass the required FITNESSGRAM test in 9th or 10th grade (students must score in
the Healthy Fitness Zone for 5 out of 6 areas assessed in order to pass) are exempt from two
additional years of physical education courses in grades 11 and 12.

Students passing the FITNESSGRAM test must give consent to be exempt from physical
education in grades 11 and 12.

Students who are exempt from physical education in grades 11 and 12 may take elective
          physical education courses.

Students that do not achieve 5 out of the 6 Healthy Fitness Zones on the FITNESSGRAM test in
9th grade may attempt to pass the test in 10th grade and each year after, until they pass.

Passing the FITNESSGRAM test is NOT a graduation requirement.

Students will be given school support by their physical education department during class time
to gain the competency needed to pass the test.

This year the FITNESSGRAM will be administered between March 1 and March 26, 2010. Please contact
your child’s school for the specific date and time of the assessment.

You may also contact me at (619) 725-7126, Brenna Baringer at (619) 725-7124, or Erin Gordon in
Assessment Services at (619) 725-5687 for more information about the physical education requirement or
the FITNESSGRAM test.

Bruce Ward

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 6:00-8:00 PM in the Cafetorium
Did you know?
• In the past six years, more than 143 San Diego deaths were attributed to underage
drinking. And in 2008, more than 300 kids entered a county treatment program for their
addiction to alcohol. (San Diego Youth Council)

• Forty-two percent of 11th graders reported drinking in the past 30 days. Ten percent of
9- and 10-year-olds have started drinking. (San Diego County Health and Human Services
Agency)

• One in five teens in a serious relationship reports having been hit, slapped, or pushed by
a partner. (National Center for Victims of Crimes)

• Young people and adults have been criminally charged with a felony for sending, receiving,
or creating a photo involving a person younger than 18 in a sexually explicit or
obscene image.

• Depending on the crime and the age, a high school student can be charged as an adult
and the record can follow them for their entire life, including registering as a sex offender.

• Parents can be held criminally liable for hosting a party where alcohol is served.

• An entire college fund or retirement fund can be wiped out to pay for the defense of a
teen’s criminal act or for a rehabilitation program.
If any of these facts surprise you, the San Diego Superior Court wants you to hear what local teens are
really doing with their friends, or on their cell phones and computers. Award-winning Judge Frederic L.
Link of the San Diego Superior Court created and presents Justice 101 for Parents. It’s a very candid
discussion about what he sees in his courtroom every day: teens and young adults who make poor
choices and wind up in serious legal trouble.

Judge Link is nationally recognized for speaking on the issues that teens face today, and after 29 years
on the bench, he’s seen it all! He gives parents the straight facts--even those they may not want to hear-
-and he offers practical advice on how they can help their teens avoid situations that can destroy their
lives.

Joining Judge Link in the presentation is Juvenile Court Judge Carolyn M. Caietti. Appointed to the bench
in 2006, she shares Judge Link’s passion for reaching youth on the brink of adulthood. She knows how
critical it is to get through to them now about the dangers and responsibilities they face, and why it’s so
important that parents don’t ignore what’s really happening in their kids’ lives. Both Judges Link and
Caietti are dynamic and animated speakers with a “no-holds barred” approach to addressing these tough
issues. Together they present a powerful message.
     • Don’t think the facts above don’t apply to you or your kids.
     • Don’t miss Justice 101 for Parents!
     • This presentation is designed for parents ONLY. Students and young children will
         not be admitted.

We hope to see you then.

ESL/Second Language Department News
The ESL/second language department is implementing parent visitation days to
accommodate working parents who live out of the school’s area. The purpose is to have
second language parents become familiar with Patrick Henry and to meet the wonderful
staff (credentialed and certificated) that services their students. Parents visit the ESL
classroom, and have the opportunity of visiting the counseling office, library, and nurse’s
office. As these parents become more familiar with our school, they become more
proactive in their students’ education. The opportunity is extended to all second language
parents. All that is necessary is for them to make an appointment ahead of time by
contacting Carol Lazarus at (619) 286-7700 ext 4303 or clazarus@sandi.net.

Host families are needed for 21 students from our sister school, Lyceé St. Michel in
France. Students will be here from April 3 through April 17, 2010. If your family is
interested in this valuable experience please contact Mrs. Macedo at rmacedo@sandi.net
for information.

Library News
The Patrick Henry High School Library is requesting donations of gently used books.
Books can be dropped off at the main office or in the school library during regular school

Circle of Friends Winter Party
   By Jessica Tran

Assortments of delectable cookies were open for members of Circle of Friends on Friday
December 18, 2009 at the Holiday Party. It was the last day that members could hang out with
their friends before having Winter break. It was held at the tables by the science building.

There were many things members could do at this party. Not only could they eat cookies, but they
could eat chips, candy, etc. They could also do some fun activities.

Instead of the usual board games and card games available during lunch, there was an art project
members could do together related to the winter holidays, such as make snowflakes (which are
going to be displayed in the Alice in Wonderland Dance in January 2010. Not every member of
Circle of Friends came, since it was held on a Friday, but the people who were able to make it
thought it was fun. The fact that everyone had a good time made it a special last day of lunch
before break.

This party during lunch at Circle of Friends was different from other lunch days peer friends
could have lunch with their friends from every day of the week instead of only their friends on
Friday. So some lucky students had lunch with as many as eight friends, rather than the usual two
or three.

Having lunch with as many as eight friends is a big deal to some members, especially because
Circle of Friends is a social skills program for those who have trouble socializing. It helps
struggling students of Patrick Henry to learn how to communicate with others and how to behave.
For some, this is a big struggle, but Circle of Friends helps them the whole way.

Generally, everyone who went to the Circle of Friends Holiday Party had a good time before
Winter break. The person who made this possible was the Circle of Friends officer board and
Ellen Goren, Circle of Friends Advisor.

Goren started this club in 2005. She got the idea from a parent who discovered this program. A
Speech/Language Pathologist at Santa Monica High School adapted a concept to include special
needs students with typical students in activities at school and in the community, so, according to
her, “it wasn’t a new idea.” At Santa Monica’s Circle of Friends, all of the members had many
things they could do, and made many new friends. This inspired her to bring change to lunch
time at Patrick Henry.

Before Goren instilled the program at Henry, many of the special education students ate lunch
alone, with adults or in their classrooms and didn’t have anyone to talk to or hang out with. With
Circle of Friends, they have been able to form new bonds with other students they may never
have met without it, and lunch is much more fun.

From daily lunches to weekend bowling parties, everyone is involved, and as Goren says, “Circle
of Friends impacts everyone’s lives...” which is very true. For most who participate in C.O.F,
after the first few lunches, being in the program becomes less about community service hours,
and more about maintaining friendships and having fun. Everyone is dedicated, which is a reason
for the club’s huge success.

Following the Winter break party there will be a Winter Dance on January 16th and a Valentines
Party February 10th, along with many other events after that.
