Hampstead Theatre is one of the UK’s leading new writing companies – a company
that has just celebrated its fiftieth year of operation.

Throughout its long history the theatre has existed to support a thriving local, national
and international playwriting culture. We commission plays in order to enrich and
enliven this culture. We support, develop and produce the work of new writers,
emerging writers, established writers, mid-career writers and senior writers and have
a proud tradition for creating the conditions for their plays and careers to develop.

The list of playwrights who had their early work produced at Hampstead Theatre and
who are now filling theatres all over the country and beyond include Mike Leigh,
Michael Frayn, Brian Friel, Terry Johnson, Hanif Kureishi, Simon Block, Abi Morgan,
Rona Munro, Tamsin Oglesby, Harold Pinter, Shelagh Stephenson, debbie tucker
green, Crispin Whittell, Roy Williams and Dennis Kelly.

The Creative Learning programme is also an integral part of Hampstead Theatre’s
work. We aim to celebrate all aspects of the creative process in ways which support
learning and widen access to the theatre’s programme. Inspiring creativity and
developing emerging talent, at its best our work has the power to change lives.

In recent years we have been proud to establish a strong tradition of collaborating
with some of the country’s leading repertory and touring theatre companies.

Edward Hall has been appointed Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Hampstead
Theatre, taking over from Anthony Clark at the end of January. Hall’s inaugural
season will be announced later this spring/early summer to open in the autumn of
that year.

Edward Hall is one of the UK’s most sought-after directors. He has won numerous
awards and critical acclaim for his inventive and visceral direction of new and classic
plays, musicals, television drama and film. His all-male Shakespeare company,
Propeller, mounts productions every twelve to eighteen months which tour in the UK
and internationally, regularly playing at BAM in New York and festivals around
Europe. Hall remains Artistic Director of Propeller. He is also an associate of the
National Theatre, the Watermill Theatre and the Old Vic.
