									                    Hawthorne Elementary Newsletter
                                                        June 2009

I would just like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the students, staff, and parents at Hawthorne for the
opportunity to be your principal the last four years. It seems every year we faced some sort of change and every year we
worked together to keep making Hawthorne a better place to learn and grow. I know that the staff at Hawthorne will
continue to nurture the culture and climate that make it a great school. Your new principal, Mr. Russell, is looking forward to
some opportunities still this year to meet students, staff and parents. He is very excited about joining the School District of
Waukesha and has heard great things about Hawthorne.

A special thank you to the parents, students, and staff that came out last Thursday to surprise me with an evening in my
honor and the gift of a new leather desk chair. I certainly did not expect anything like that to happen in my final weeks at
Hawthorne. It was especially nice to have the chance to spend time together and express my appreciation for what you have
done for me. I will remember this gesture forever.

Looking forward, please be sure to see that students remain academically active this summer in some small way in order to
maintain their present skills. The public library has outstanding programs for kids to take part in and they can offer you
assistance in selecting “just right” books for your children to be reading. Look for a handout coming home next week from
our reading specialist, Wendy Hamilton. She will have some more ideas for you and information on dates and times
when the Hawthorne library will be open for students this summer.

I hope that every Hawthorne family has a relaxing summer and that students return in the fall ready to learn.

Sincerely,

Mr. Kluck

                                                 Staffing Changes for 09-10
As a result of staffing changes district-wide, we have some changes at Hawthorne for next year. Ian Schaefer, who currently
teaches fifth grade at Hawthorne, will be transferring to Randall Elementary. In addition, with this decrease of one staff
member for next year we will have the following teaching assignments:

Kindergarten Mrs. Floyd and Mrs. Stevens
First Ms. Reddy
First/Second Mrs. Henriksen
Second Ms. Bloede
Third Mrs. Komar
Fourth Mr. Fager
Fourth/Fifth Mr. Roessler
Fifth Mrs. Koenig
Sixth Mr. Paulson and Mrs. Romenesko

Change is never easy but it seems to be a necessary part of working in a large, dynamic district. We thank Mr. Schaefer for
his work the past two years with our fifth and sixth grade students and wish him well at Randall.

is disruptive to the educational process will not be permitted.

    1. Clothing with inappropriate or offensive slogans will not be allowed.
    2. Children are to dress so as not to be a distraction for themselves and other students.
    3. Children should dress appropriately for the temperature and weather conditions. No midriffs are to be exposed.
         Shoulders are to be covered.
    4. Underwear must be inside of clothing
    5. Shorts need to be of appropriate length (short-shorts are not acceptable).
    6. Mini skirts must be mid-thigh length.
    7. Children are to have shoes on at all times. NO FLIP FLOPS

 accomplishments for the year.

The office will be open during the morning hours on week days. Please call prior to stopping by school to make sure someone is
available, as there will be days when no one is in the building.
                                                       Lost and Found
Please have your children check the lost and found this week. After June 12th the items will be removed.

                                                       Health Room News

We are pleased that many parents have chosen to send their children to some summer school program or activity. Whether it
will be through the School District or City Library, it is so important that you keep that school spark alive. Read, play board
games, take trips, talk at meals and have family fun together!

                                                        Math Practice
Please be sure your child practices those math facts they have mastered this school year. Quiz them when riding in the car or
spend 10 minutes doing flash cards to stay sharp! Please visit these websites to work on basic facts:

                                           BEGINNING BAND FALL 2008-2009
Band is offered to all students entering sixth grade in the fall. Students were introduced to the instruments at school in late
May. They should have met or will be meeting with the band teacher before this school year is over and have selected an
instrument. Weekly lessons will begin once school has started. You will receive information at the start of school as to when
your child will be expected to have his/her materials at school. If there is a change or your child was unable to select an
instrument, they will have another chance in the fall. A reminder that there is also a weekly Monday Night commitment which
will begin in middle October. We meet at North High School for a large group rehearsal from 5:30-6:15.
 See you soon!
Mrs. Perry
