Thank you for choosing to stay at the University of Cumbria
Rooms are cleaned and beds made by University domestic staff. Visitors are advised to keep
their bedroom locked when unattended. Please do no move furniture from room to room.
If you have been allocated a ground floor bedroom, for security reasons please ensure your
window is securely fastened when the room is unoccupied.
Cars may be parked in the two lower car parks at Scale How, or on the car park near your
residential accommodation. Please do not park in the Health Centre grounds or any grassed
area. The car park in front of the main administrative centre (Scale How) may only be used for
short stays or by disabled permit holders and for unloading. Permits or parking tickets are
required to be displayed on all vehicles.
Meals are served in the Scale How Dining Room or Loughrigg Room. Meal times and bar
opening times are as agreed by your course or Conference Organiser.
Smartis Bar is open at lunchtimes, pre dinner and during dinner for wine and alcohol sales.
After dinner only by prior arrangement.
The Overdraught bar is only available if pre arranged with the Conference Organiser.
Please feel free to use our sports facilities. There is a sports hall, gym and climbing wall
situated on campus.The Sports Centre is open 4pm — 8pm Tuesday —Thursday. Pre book for
gym induction. There is a £3 fee for Sports Centre users per visit. Tennis racquets are
available at Reception for use on the tennis courts.
Delegates rooms are available after 2pm, and delegates are asked to vacate their rooms by
9am. All keys must be signed in and out at Reception.
Delegates attending lectures on the morning of departure, please ensure all of your
belongings are removed from your room before your session starts. If you need to store your
luggage before departure, the University has provision for this. Please contact Reception.
Please make yourself familiar with the fire exits and the location of the fire fighting appliances.
Details of the fire procedure can be found on the wall by the bedroom door.
Please keep your keys with you at all times. On the day of departure please leave your key at
Reception. All keys for the facility or accommodation are the responsibility of the client. If keys
are not returned at the end of the period, the client will be charged a fee of £30.00.If you lose
your keys, please contact Reception immediately.
Visitors are welcome to use the laundry facility which costs £1.40 for a wash and 50p for a 15
minute dry. The machines are coin operated and are located in Millet Yard and open from
7am—10pm.
Hairdryers, alarm clocks, shaver plugs and UK adapters are available to loan from
Reception.
Iron and ironing board are located in the kitchen on most floors of the accommodation block.
Room temperature – this may be adjusted to meet your personal comfort. Please adjust the
control settings on the radiator. Extra blankets / bedding are available on request.
Internet access is available in most bedrooms. Please see enclosed within this welcome bro-
chure details on how to install and pay for internet access. The charge is £5.00 per stay.
General IT access is in the Grasmere Room if pre arranged by your Conference Organiser.

For out of hours medical services – call on a payphone Baycall 0845 0524999
The nearest Health Centre is located on Rydal Road. For Police/Fire/Ambulance call 9999
from an internal phone and 999 from an external phone. If you require extra assistance in
case of emergency, please inform Reception.
A Security Officer is on duty each evening from 7.30pm – 7.30am. Internal extension number
5300. CCTV is located at various points on the campus. Please note that for your safety,
Security Officers make regular patrols in the grounds of the campus.
Cash points are located in town – Barclays Bank, HSBC and Natwest. Cashback can also be
obtained at the Spar and Co-Op. Please see Ambleside town map.
The Multi Faith Room is located in Scale How Room B58 and the Chapel in the Little Barn.
The Post Office is located within the Tourist Information Centre at Market Cross. Newspapers
are available daily in the lounge. Post may be left at Reception.
Zeffirellis Cinema is located on Compston Road – please see enclosed map.
Fair trade and local produce are used in our catering. Where possible fresh produce is locally
sourced. We also sell bottled One Water. All One Water profits go to building unique
roundabout powered PlayPumps in Africa. As children play, clean water is pumped out of the
ground into storage tanks for use by the community. Domestic Service staff empty refuse bins
daily. Recycling bins are located in Millet Yard for paper, glass, cans and plastic.
We have bedrooms designed to ensure a comfortable stay for our guests with mobility and
hearing impairments.
An internal phone is located on the ground floor of each building and A ,C and D floor in
Fairfield Hall. These can be used to contact Reception/Security staff in an emergency
on extension 5300. Reception is manned 24 hours. Emergency telephone numbers are also
located by the phone and within this pack.
Liability
The University of Cumbria accepts no liability within its premises or grounds for loss or damage
to the property (including private cars) of individuals or groups and shall be indemnified against
any claim by any person or persons in respect of loss, injury or damage. All property is left
entirely at the owner’s risk. A public liability certificate is on display in Reception.
Maintenance
If there are any defects in your room, please complete one of the yellow maintenance slips,
which can be found in this pack and hand into the Reception. Minor repairs etc will be
attended as soon as possible and if a repair is in progress a calling card will be left. Please
report emergencies to Reception.
