PURPOSE OF TOUR
The club is returning to our regular Easter haunt of Majorca, intending to explore and
enjoy the enormous caverns distributed over the hilly North of the Island.

Over the years, the Easter tours have been a mainstay of the club, essential for
training the new members in advanced caving techniques, and instilling confidence in
rigging and ropework which ensures the safe running of the club in future years.

We are taking at least two first-year students with us to Majorca, with the intent of
training them to prepare for the summer expedition. The caves available are far larger
and more extensive that those in the UK, offering opportunity to learn essential
navigational skills and endurance abilities, but in a safer and warmer environment that
the Julian alps where the summer expedition takes place.

Also, the caves in Majorca are remote and at high altitude – a similar setup to the area
in Slovenia where our summer tour takes place, allowing us to teach the necessary
ancillary skills of hill walking and navigation amongst limestone mountains.

One may ask why we don’t simply have a tour to Slovenia, the reason being that our
Mountain would be under approximately 5m of snow, requiring full mountaineering
gear and ice axes just to reach the cave entrances – not the ideal learning situation for
first years!

As usual, we publish our results in Felix, on our extensive and often linked-to
website, in specialist caving magazines and we also present our experiences at the
annual BCRA conference.
