                                     HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!


1. WE WILL HAVE SCHOOL on Monday, February 15th. Our Snow Day #1 was used due to bad
   weather this week so we will have a normal day on Monday!

2. The Cumberland Parent Council is planning to revise our by-laws (last revised in 2006). The text of
   the suggested revision is posted on the Parent Council page of the Cumberland website
   (http://www.wl.k12.in.us/cumberland/parentcouncil/parentcouncil.htm). We plan to discuss these
   revisions in our meeting on March 9, 2010, and your input would be appreciated! Please join us for the
   meeting, or email comments to Ellen Dennehey (ellendennehy@gmail.com). Thank you.

3. Civic Youth Theatre of Greater Lafayette is presenting Snow White, directed by Missy Freels, on
   February 26-28, 2010. Performances will be Friday and Saturday at 7 pm, and Sunday at 2:30 pm.
   This humorous take on a classic tale includes a bumbling prince, a very involved mirror and not just
   one, but three attempts on Snow White’s life. Add a lot of dwarfs and a happily-ever-after ending and
   you have a great play for all ages. Tickets are on sale now at http://www.lafcivic.org/.

4. BOX TOPS - We raised over $1200 last semester. Please continue collecting Box Tops logos. Our
   deadline for the second semester is Friday, February 19th. Please put all box tops in an envelope with
   your teacher's name and place them in the large pink box by the office.

5. RENT MY SPACE!! If you are interested in having a reserved parking space at Cumberland
   Elementary School for one week (or more) you now have an opportunity to “RENT MY SPACE” – Please
   see the attached flyer and take part in this Fundraiser sponsored by Mrs. Bowers to support the
   Schools Worth Saving campaign! Checks should be made out to Friends of WLCSC.

6. Kindergarten Round-Up is coming!! February 24th, 8:00 am – 1:00 pm and 6-7 pm – more
   information is on our website – please pass the word to friends and neighbors!

7. International Art Night is fast approaching and we are looking for volunteers. International Art
   night is scheduled for April 16 and we are in need of many volunteers. If you are interested, please
   contact Holly Benjemia at 463-2323 of hollybenjemia@huntington.com and Kama Darr at 337-3151 or
   ckdarr@comcast.net

8. School Closing/Delay: If there is severe weather that requires the cancellation or delay of school,
   notification will be made as early as possible through the local radio and television stations.
   Cumberland is in the West Lafayette School Corporation. When school is cancelled for weather
   concerns, the building is closed and all extracurricular activities are cancelled. Buses will run 2 hours
   later than the original pickup times. Students should not arrive until fifteen minutes before the start of
   school. Closings/Delays will also be posted on the web site at, www.wl.k12.in.us. ½ day kindergarten
   classes “take turns” on 2-hour delay days. If the information states Alt. Kindergarten Schedule it
   means that the morning students attend in the afternoon from 12:30 to 3:15 pm. If the information
   states No AM Kindergarten, then the pm kindergarten students come to school as normal. This helps
   to “balance” instruction time if the season necessitates several delays. Please refer to your handbook
   or kindergarten newsletters if you have questions. (Or contact your child’s teacher or the office)

9. If you would like to be notified by email or text through Event Link about school closings or delays,
   you may register at eventlink.com or call 800-705-7526.
   10. When we have inclement weather that begins during the school day please listen to the radio,
       watch Channel 18, or watch the corporation web site. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL – we do
       not know when or if school will close until our Superintendent makes the decision. Calls to ask if we
       will be closing school ties up our phone lines unnecessarily. Thank you for your cooperation in this
       matter.

   11. FYI – National Volunteer Week – April 18th – 24th – please make sure you thank a volunteer that
       you know!

   12. We are in need of a small, round trampoline for a school project. If you have one at home that you
       would like to donate, please call Mrs. Bowers’ secretary to leave a message and Mrs. Bowers will call
       you back. The type of trampoline needed is the one that is usually used for exercise programs.

   13. Please remember to check lost and found on a regular basis – unfortunately, it is always full!

   14. Saturday, February 13th from 1-3 pm there will be a Reading Marathon at the West Lafayette
       Public Library for students in grades 2 and 3. This is sponsored by the Purdue Mortar Board
       organization – Purdue Athletes will be there, every child registered will receive a free book, a library
       scavenger hunt will be held and many other great activities, email MB4reading@gmail.com to register
       your child for this great opportunity!!

                         THANK YOU FOR THE WINTER CARNIVAL'S SUCCESS

The second annual Cumberland Winter Carnival was a huge success! Many Cumberland families celebrated
a beautiful winter evening with games, food, and fun. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the
efforts of the Carnival Committee, including Jackie Driggs and Anne LaPlant (Co-Chairs) and Andrea Kane
(Volunteer Coordinator), and the Raffle Committee, Ellen Dennehy and Rachel Shook (Co-Chairs), Jane Lareau,
Megan Spitler.

 Thank you to the Parent Council Executive Committee and the many parent volunteers who made this
evening possible! Much thanks to Dale Driggs and Subway for preparing 600 sandwiches for the event, and
for his tireless assistance in so many ways! Also thanks to the Westside Service Organization (WesSO), our
wonderful building maintenance staff (Dave, Tom, and Alice), and Kohl’s volunteers.

We appreciate our Superintendent, Dr. Killion, who performed three magic shows for enthusiastic and full
houses! When the building PA system failed, Mayor Dennis and Mrs. Bowers demonstrated grace under
pressure and announced raffle winners to a packed house in the school lobby.

The bounce house was generously donated by Roof Recovery, and the popcorn booth by Reliable Insurance
Solutions. Carnival Sponsors were Kumon Learning Center, Coldwell Banker the Shook Agency, The Spine
Clinic (John Gorup, MD), Dr. Donald George, Alex Gorup, MD, Neovision Optical (Jeffrey Kirchner, OD),
Speaker’s Travel (Jon Speaker), Cooke Law Firm (Aaron Cooke), Law Office of Gregg S Theobald, Jeffrey
Hodge, DDS and John Folkers, DDS.
We raffled off over 250 prizes that were all donated by community businesses – please see the complete
listing on the back of this newsletter. Please show them your appreciation by your continued
patronage! Thank you!

     If you would like to rent my personal parking space for one
week I am willing to “ rent ” it to any parent/guardian who is
willing to purchase this space for one week at a time. The cost
is $25.00 for one week and this will allow you to park in my
reserved spot in the morning, afternoon, and actually any time
throughout the day. Once you apply to rent this space, I will
call you and give you an “ a ssigned ” week. If you wish to
purchase two weeks, it will cost $50.00, etc.     Please complete
the following application form and attach a check for $25.00
made out to Friends Of West Lafayette Schools. Space rented on a
first come, first served basis.
