A bathyscaphe is a submarine-like vessel designed
to probe the depths of the ocean. It is equipped
with dials, gauges and levers to operate lights and
mechanical arms on its outside.
On a recent mission, two scientists aboard the
bathyscaphe descended into the Pacific Ocean to
probe depths never before entered by human
beings. Their goal was to determine whether life
could exist in a world without light; a world where
surrounding water-pressure is so great it will crush a
human being. Supper on
When the tiny vessel reached the bottom of the ocean, miles below the
surface, the scientists turned on the exterior lights and gasped in wonder February 16
and amazement. They discovered life of all kinds – six foot long worms,
bizarre fishes, and giant crabs and corals. There, even in the midst of
darkness, was life.
How could such fragile creatures survive where water-pressure was so
