POLICY FOR THE RETENTION OF PATIENT PROPERTY WHILST ADMITTED TO
                  COMMUNITY HOSPITALS SERVICES

1. POLICY STATEMENT:
All nurses must ensure that patient’s property is kept in safe keeping for the
duration of a patients stay in hospital. Detailed written instructions are provided
regarding the collection, custody, recording, safe keeping and returning of
patients’ property (including instructions on the disposal of deceased patients
and patients transferred to other premises) in order that we minimise the loss of
        any such property.

2. RATIONALE:
To keep the patients’ property safe, while they are in the care of Brent PCT

To meet the requirements of the auditor which requires us to have a local
        procedure in place.

3. CRITERIA FOR PERFORMING THE ROLE:
All nursing staff, qualified and unqualified, whether in permanent, temporary, or
        agency posts

4. EXPECTATIONS OF THE NURSING STAFF BY THE TRUST:

4.1 Patients and their relatives if appropriate, will be advised of the procedure on the
safe keeping of valuables, and advise on what to bring / leave at home.

4.2 All care of patients property must comply with the Trusts Finance Department’s
procedure entitled ‘Patient’s Property / Monies’

4.3 Return of property on discharge or week end release, must also comply with the
        Finance Departments procedures

4.4 Patients and their relatives, where appropriate, will be advised of the cash limit
(£15.00) that may be retained by the patients at their discretion, and own risk.

4.5 Within bedded services patient’s monies are listed and signed for by a registered
nurse and the cashier. The cashier secures the money in the hospital safe / may
be kept in a locked cash box (Kingsbury). All individual transactions will be
recorded and checked on a daily basis. Finance department procedures must be
followed whenever a patient needs to access an interim sum of money in cash.

4.6 A record of the patient’s property will be made in the Patient’s Property Book and
of their valuables in the Valuables Book, as issued by Brent PCT finance Dept.

4.7 Valuables will be secured on site by the named cashier for that site if requested
by patient or relatives / carers.

4.8 A receipt for property will be given to the patient, including a nil receipt where
appropriate. (A copy is retained for reference)

4.9 Where a patient temporarily transfers either to or from the acute sector, there
must be an interim ‘cross check’ of valuables sent with the patient against the
original documentation, and again on return.

4.10 The risk of loss or breakage remains with the patient, where property is retained
        by them, on Trust site.

        users.

4.13 Where accidental damage occurs to patient property, whether on Trust property
or in a patient’s home, by a member of staff, that member of staff must report the
        incident using the appropriate documentation.
