Cost: $1.50 each, plus tax

Purpose: This patch program was designed to help Girl Scouts become more aware
of the United Way, its meaning, purpose, and importance to the
community. Remember, we are a United Way agency and are grateful for
the support of the United Way.

This is a troop patch program.

Requirements: Girl Scout Brownies must only complete the starred (*) activities.
Girl Scout Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors must complete
five of the 10 activities, including #1, #6, and #10.

The original patch program and the patch design were created by Karen Crain, a Girl Scout Senior in
Pioneer Girl Scout Council. This was a step toward her Girl Scout Gold Award. We thank Karen and
Pioneer Girl Scout Council for sharing this patch program.

                                         Activities

The following patch activities can be done any time during the year, but fall is the United Way
Campaign time and is most appropriate for earning the patch. Please work with your local
United Way Executive for timing. Your girls will not be involved in raising money or soliciting
funds.

*1. Recognize It: Learn to recognize the United Way symbol and the meaning behind it.
*2. Take a Tour: Go to your local United Way office for a tour or film presentation, or ask
someone from United Way to attend your troop meeting for an orientation. Keep in
mind that fall is a busy time for United Ways. Please contact your local United Way
      Executive for the best time.
*3. Find Agencies: Learn which agencies are United Way agencies in your area.
4. Assist Publicity: Submit poster ideas or United Way activities for possible
use for publication or publicity during the year. Check with your local United
Way Executive for the best time of the year and suggestions for the poster.
5. Make Suggestions: Give suggestions on how United Way can reach their
      goal for the campaign.
*6. Perform a Service: Participate in a service project at one of the United Way agencies.
(Example: bloodmobile, senior lifesaving, CPR, stuffing envelopes, yard work, etc.)
7. Volunteer: Participate as a volunteer in the United Way’s kick-off for its campaign.
(Example: display at Expo, work in booth at United Way Fair, etc.)
8. Serve: Serve as a United Way volunteer for at least two hours. Contact your United
Way office to see what you can do.
*9. Make a Collage: Make a collage on things you think are related to United Way.
10. Interview People: Interview five people in your community. Ask if they contribute to
the United Way and why. Write a report and turn it in to the Council office. This should
be a troop report. Identify the Service Unit on your report.
