NO REST FOR THE BRAVE
Dir. ALAIN GUIRADIE, FRANCE/AUSTRIA, 2003, 107 MINS, SUBS

‘a breezy surety that consistently entertains… disarming, deadpan
charm.’ Empire
‘Like Jacques Tati on acid.’ Screen International
‘Avant-garde, hilarious, odd but constantly engaging’ Variety

Basile Martin dreamt that tonight could be his last night. To
rule out morality he decides to go for a ramble, and never to
sleep again.

One of France’s brightest filmmaking prospects is the totally
unclassifiable Alain Guiradie, the 40 year old director whose
longform short-film Real Cool Time was singled out for praise by
Jean-Luc Godard at the Cannes film festival in 2000.

This out-there, coming-of-age movie (Guiradie’s feature debut)
follows the surreal odyssey of Basile, a young man who daren’t
fall asleep for fear that he’ll die. However, his adventures –
which bring him into contact with all sorts of colourful
characters – already seem to be taking place in an unreliable
dreamscape masquerading as a pair of rural French villages (named
‘Living’ and ‘Dying’).

Despite the extreme narrative anarchy and often wild style, this
is a carefully designed and very deliberately structured attempt
to capture the liberation and lassitude of youth.
