1. Desire Essences

Label the desire essences of the main characters

 Major motivations – what the character wants or seeks. These are qualities or conditions that the

character seeks to maximize.

 History plus genetics – consider ethnicity, major life events, and religious beliefs, sex life, drugs,

music, parents siblings, education, appearance and intelligence.

 Deep aspirations – strongly held, deeply felt.

 Essences drive the character to change.

2. Fear Essences

Label the fear essences of the main characters

 Each desire essence has an antithetical fear that springs from not achieving the desire.

 Major motivations – what the character wants or seeks. These are qualities or conditions that the

character seeks to maximize.

 History plus genetics – consider ethnicity, major life events, and religious beliefs, sex life, drugs,

music, parents siblings, education, appearance and intelligence.

 Deep aspirations – strongly held, deeply felt

2a. Refine the Essence Pairs

Refine the list by deleting pairs that are not strong motivations. Add new pairs to come up with the best ten

pairs.



3. Create Specific Back-Stories

 Illustrate defining moments in character's life.

 Show how the essences came about.

 Give five examples for each of the ten best pairs.

 Write a half-page for each back-story.

4. Describe Current Behavior

 For each of the essences, come up with scenarios that illustrate behavior resulting from the essences.

5. Raise the Stakes

 Write out would the characters behave in worst-case situations.



6. Don't Meddle

 The characters have to make decisions based on what fits their essences.

 If you come to a situation that is not explained by the essences, rework the previous steps until the

answer is clear

 Check the behavior of the character for consistency with the essences. You should be able to note the

specific principles that drive concrete actions.



7. Let Your Characters Play

 Allow the characters to interact with each other according to their own values and behavior.

 Be open to complex and unpredictable actions by the characters. As long as they are not meddled with,

these behaviors are representative and will ring true.



8. Science Fiction/Fantasy Application

 Essences are aggregated for peoples, civilization, and worlds.

 May possibly apply to technologies.

 Develop “What if ...” scenarios.
