Job Title:            Strategic Manager (Sport Operations)

Grade:                Management & Specialist Grade 7

Department:           Sports Development Centre (SDC)

Responsible to:       Deputy Director of Sport (Operations)

Responsible for:      Service Delivery Managers and Operational Staff

Job Purpose           To work within the SDC Senior Management Team to develop
                      and implement the SDC’s vision, aims and values; to contribute
                      to an overall sport strategy and to coordinate the development
                      and delivery of sport specific plans as required.

Key Tasks

      To work within a team of Strategic Managers to lead and manage the
       development and implementation of specific elements of the overall sport plan
       within the SDC.

      To take the lead in coordinating the development of specific sport
       development plans and all outdoor sport and recreation strategies including
       recreational space and playing fields.

      To take the lead in ensuring projects within the SDC are managed effectively
       and consistently to agreed timescales and processes.

      To lead and manage a team of staff who are focussed on delivering a high
       quality user experience and agreed performance outcomes across designated
       SDC facilities and programmes.

      To lead a multi-disciplinary team of SDC staff to deliver sport specific plans in
       selected sports.

      To work within the SDC Senior Management Team to ensure a coordinated
       approach to the delivery of the overall sport plan.

      To develop and maintain effective partnerships with other external agencies,
       e.g. UK Sport, Sport England, emda, Leicestershire County Council,
       Charnwood Borough Council, National Governing Bodies of Sport and other
       funding agencies to enhance the quality of the offer within designated sports
       and specific facilities in order to meet University and SDC objectives.

      To develop and maintain effective partnerships with internal partners,
       especially Sports Technology Institute (STI), School of Sport, Exercise and
       Health Sciences (SSEHS), imago and Facilities Management and manage the
       input they can have in selected sports to help achieve the overall objectives.

      To act as the lead in working with other University departments, especially
       Facilities Management, in the delivery of all aspects of outdoor sport and

      To take the lead in developing and implementing an agreed programme of
       performance management which continually monitors and reviews standards
       and performance and includes the provision of an effective programme of

      To work across all areas of the SDC to ensure the client experience and
       facility requirements are built into the development plans for all sports.

      To take the lead in ensuring SDC achieves the key performance measures in
       the successful delivery of SportPark.

      As part of the Operations Management Team, to contribute to strategic
       planning and the formulation of policies and procedures for SDC.

Duties and Responsibilities

      To oversee the implementation of the SDC development plan, ensuring the
       provision and coordination of high quality services which includes facilities,
       business development/events and marketing and communication, in selected
       sports and specific facilities.

      In accordance with University procedures, to manage the financial operation of
       designated areas including the setting and managing of budgets, identifying
       and exploiting potential new revenue streams and ensuring budgets are
       managed effectively and within agreed parameters.

      To produce regular financial reports, as required, and an annual report on
       selected sports.

      To ensure that Health and Safety requirements are adhered to and that all
       staff are suitably qualified and receive the appropriate training.

      To identify opportunities to positively promote and publicise Loughborough

Special Conditions

It will be necessary, on occasions, to work outside normal working hours including

Conditions of Service

The post is full-time and open-ended. The salary will be on the Management and
Specialist Grade 7 scale £36,532 to £43,622 per annum and is dependent upon
previous qualifications and experience.
