GEOGRAPHY Key Stage 2 QCA Unit 9 – Year 4 Town Settlements Why did people settle in Chesterfield? How did Chesterfield develop as a settlement? This unit combines work on Romans, Tudors and Victorians with geographical work on the development of settlements. It introduces children to how Chesterfield developed as a settlement over time and how early settlers provided the location for the settlement of Chesterfield we still use today. The children will be involved in classroom activities where they discuss the needs of early settlers and consider what might be the best locations. They will discover how Chesterfield developed over time using maps and plans and carry out fieldwork to discover how the layers of development can be read in the streets of the town to day. Classroom Activity To discover how Chesterfield developed as a Tudor town around the market and Church. Fieldwork Activity To discover the remnants of the Tudor town in the streets beneath the present day town. Classroom Activity To discuss how Chesterfield developed in Victorian times.
