					                        Integrating Quotations
Adapted from Diana Hacker’s Rules for Writers

   1. Use signal phrases to move from your words to those of the source.

Bad example or dropped quote: The truths that are related to memory
represent the other of reality because they take on a different form than
that which actually occurred. “Memory deals with the mass of
impressions received in later life by a process of selection, retaining what
is important and omitting what is not” (Freud 178).

Good example with signal phrase: …Sigmund Freud describes how
“[m]emory deals with the mass of impression received in later life by a
process of selection, retaining what is important and omitting what is not”
       (178).

   2. Verbs in signal phrases: acknowledges, adds, asserts, claims,
contends, declares, illustrates, implies, refutes, suggests.

   3. Block quotations: These are needed when you quote more than four
lines of prose or three lines of poetry. Set the quote off with a one inch or
ten-space indention. Do not single space and do not use quotation
marks. Block quotes are usually preceded by an introductory sentence
      and colon.

          a. Example:

The deplorable living conditions in Vietnam were likely minimized by both time

and Caputo’s memory, but he summons them when he writes:

We had no field showers at first; there was seldom enough water

for drinking, let alone bathing, and much of that was the green-as-

pea-soup stuff we drew from village wells. It was purified with

halizone tablets, which made it taste like iodine. Even with the

tablets, the water loosened everyone’s bowels, and if there is any

one odor I will always associate with Vietnam, it is the stench of

feces and lime in a latrine. (65)
