The Future is Bright; the Future is Social Media....
Are you a member of Facebook? Do you Twitter? Do you seek advice from forums, review or rating sites
before you make a purchase? These online platforms are all forms of Social Media and they represent the
       future of marketing.
To enable businesses to take advantage of these tools effectively, Jersey’s first Social Media Marketing
company, Bright Social Media, has been set up by marketer Katrina de Gruchy.
Katrina says: “We are going back to the age of the community and it’s all about being social! Social
Media is the new water cooler or chat over the fence. The world has just got smaller and we are reaching
out and making friends across the world. We are sharing written, oral and visual information with online
communities through various Social Media tools, including blogging, podcasts, forums and social
       networking sites.
“Needless to say, the use of Social Media as a marketing tool has quickly become prominent in the modern
business world and, if used correctly, can be an extremely effective way to promote products and services
       to targeted audiences.”
The future of marketing is changing, she says. “It is an exciting new era for marketing. Although
traditional marketing is still alive and kicking, a new development has occurred. Customers are now in
control! They no longer want to be talked at but rather listened too. People are creating communities
online by the thousands and are often listening to people’s opinions before making purchasing decisions.”
Case studies which demonstrate the use of Social Media are amongst the largest in marketing history.
Barack Obama, for example, managed to raise over $300million for his presidential campaign using Social
Media tools and, more importantly, they enabled him to connect, engage and communication with millions
       to win the American Presidency.
The success of Barack’s Social Media Campaign did not go unnoticed and the UK Government has now
introduced a Social Media campaign to engage with Britain on the run up to the next General Election. Sky
News have even employed a ‘Twitter correspondent' to focus on politics for its Westminster bureau, “ahead
of what is likely to be a very social media general election".
Katrina says: “You only have to look at the impressive growth statistics on Social Media to know that
       change is already underway:
•If Facebook were a country it would be the world’s third largest in the world after China and India
•The second largest search engine in the world is YouTube
•Social Media is the number one activity on the Web
“Today’s businesses need to harness these marketing tools. The benefits can include: driving more traffic
to your website; building strong relationships with your customers; and increasing your search engine
rankings amongst others. Social Media gives direct feedback, gets you closer to the clients and helps you
better understand your positioning in the market place.”

Although Social Media is at everyone’s fingertips, Katrina says businesses must know what they are doing
with it. “Unfortunately, many companies and organisations leap into Social Media Marketing without the
knowledge or experience on how to use it properly. The most common mistakes include using blogs to
solely promote products or services, providing inaccurate or uninteresting content or simply failing to
engage with honest dialogue with their customers. Getting started on the right foot is essential in executing
a successful media marketing campaign and that’s where Bright Social Media comes in.”
