Virtualisation
Virtualisation
Hardware Level – eg LPAR
Operating System Level
- eg Solaris Containers/Zones

How Oracle Recognises Virtualisation
Hard Soft
www.rocela.com
“Hard” Partitioning
• Oracle recognises various forms of server partitioning
as “Hard” partitioning
• Some examples are as follows;
– Solaris 10 Containers (capped containers only)
– LPAR
– DLPAR
– Capped Micro-Partitions
– vPar Hard Soft
– nPar

“Soft” Partitioning
• Oracle classes other forms of virtualisation as “Soft”
Partitioning and views as a more flexible form of
partitioning
• The processor capacity can be easily changed
• As such Oracle does not permit “Soft” partitioning as
a means to determine or limit the number of software
licences required for any given server
• Some examples of “Soft” partitioning;
– VMware
– AIX Workload Manager
– HP Process Resource Manager

Oracle VM
• Oracle has it’s own form of virtualisation which can
be used as soft or hard partitioning
• In most cases it is recognised as soft partitioning
• If the CPU binding is hardcoded then it could be
recognised as hard partitioning
