Minimum Hardware and Software
     Operating Guidelines

       Valid January 2009-September 2009
Overview
PBI software runs on any industry standard 32-bit PC running a Microsoft Windows
operating system. PBI software interfaces with Microsoft SQL Server to access data in a
client-server environment.

Server Hardware and Software Guidelines
Depending on your organizational demands of the server, several options are available
when implementing PBI. Fast access to data is critical to the performance experienced by
PBI client computers. Therefore, meeting or exceeding the minimum guidelines for your
user base is critical.

This document serves as guidelines based on successful implementations of PBI. These
guidelines are intended to assist your organization as you prepare to implement PBI within
your organization. A technical discussion will occur prior to purchasing to customize the
specifications for your site. Please note it is your responsibility to purchase appropriate
hardware and software licenses.

                                                                        Datamasters, Inc.
                                                                      50 Berkshire Court

Modem Standard
CD-ROM Standard
Mouse/Keyboard Standard
Monitor Standard VGA capable of 1024x768 resolution minimum
Required Software Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0, MDAC 2.8 SP1
Recommended Third-Party Optional for the server
Software Microsoft Excel 2000 (or higher) for exporting data
Microsoft Word 2000 (or higher) for exporting data
Adobe Reader 6 (or higher) for viewing PDF files
Please note: To capitalize on the full capabilities of PBI, a copy of Microsoft Office should
be installed onto the server.
Please note: Before purchasing hardware a teleconference with the PBI Technical Team is
strongly recommended.

Memory beyond 4 GB requires Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition to take full advantage of the
additional RAM. Expanding the server beyond 4 GB of RAM allows SQL Server Standard Edition to
consume the maximum 4 GB of RAM while additional memory is used for other tasks such as the O/S and
PBI Scheduler.
                                                                               Datamasters, Inc.
                                                                             50 Berkshire Court

Large Organizations
A large organization will have 75 or more concurrent users querying the database. The
total database size will be 100 GB or greater. The following are minimum guidelines for
this class of deployment:
Operating System 2003 Server/2003 R2/2008 Server
Database Server Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise SP3

Recommended Third-Party Optional for the server
Software Microsoft Excel 2000 (or higher) for exporting data
Microsoft Word 2000 (or higher) for exporting data
Adobe Reader 6 (or higher) for viewing PDF files
Please note: To capitalize on the full capabilities of PBI, a copy of Microsoft Office should
be installed onto the server.

Also note, an enterprise SAN is not recommended unless dedicated spindles. A minimum
of 32 dedicated spindles (hard disks) in a RAID-10 configuration are recommended with at
least one, dual channel 4 Gpbs HBA with 4 Gbps maintained between server to SAN.

                                                                         Datamasters, Inc.
                                                                       50 Berkshire Court
                                                                    Wyomissing, PA 19610

Server Backup/UPS
 An optical or tape backup system is recommended with the capacity to backup all
         the data.
o Use of native SQL Server backup.
o Enterprise backup solutions for files and operating system.
 Enterprise backup solutions often offer optional SQL Server backup
components. Such components should not be added to the server.
In many cases the SQL Server components create contention
between the nightly data load and the backup.
 Use the SQL Server backup setting the backup unit to a file device
and use the enterprise solution to backup this file from SQL Server.
 An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) should be considered with sufficient volt-
amps to power the server through an orderly shutdown of the system (typically 10
         minutes of time.)
o Check with your facilities management staff. Adding a UPS to existing
corporate battery backup systems may add additional drain to this system.

                                                                         Datamasters, Inc.
                                                                       50 Berkshire Court

PBI Workstation Guidelines
To provide end-users with the most robust experience with PBI, the following
specifications are the minimum guidelines for desktop workstations:
Operating System Windows 2000 SP4/Windows XP SP2 or higher
Network Operating System None, Microsoft Workgroup or Microsoft Domain
                              environment2
Processor 1 Duo-Core processor at 2.4 GHz or higher
Memory 512 MB of free RAM3
(Note that Microsoft Windows Vista recommends 1 GB of memory. Vista is not
certified for PBI at this time but in preparation for the new operating system,
PBI recommends 1.5 GB of RAM or higher in the client workstations.)
Hard Disk 4 GB of free hard disk
Full control privileges to the PBI installation directory for
the end-user and a member of the Power Users group.
Network 100 Mbps, TCP/IP protocol
CD-ROM Standard
Mouse/Keyboard Standard
Monitor/Graphics SVGA with 1024x768 resolution, 8 MB of video RAM
Required Software Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1 and 2.0, MDAC 2.8 SP1

Recommended Third-Party Microsoft Excel 2000 (or higher) for exporting data
Software Microsoft Word 2000 (or higher) for exporting data
Adobe Reader 6 (or higher) for viewing PDF files
MAPI Compliant4 Email (sending email from client PC)
Please note that all client machines must have full write access to the PBI installation
directory. The default is: C:\program files\precisionbi.

While PBI does not rely on Novell Netware for networking services, the Netware client has caused
additional workarounds to be used. DMI cannot guarantee PBI will continue to operate with future versions
of the Novell Netware client.
3
In most instances, 512 MB of total memory would be sufficient but the free memory should be verified.
4
Outlook Express is not MAPI compliant. Direct SMTP email is not supported on the client PC.
                                                                                        Datamasters, Inc.
                                                                                      50 Berkshire Court

DMI Support Access
For DMI to provide timely support of your PBI system, DMI staff needs access to your
server via the Internet. For successful support access, DMI requires at least 1 Mbps of
available bandwidth into the network where the server is connected. Larger data sets may
require more bandwidth.

A switch-based network is recommended over a concentrator-based (active or passive hub)
network. Because of the amount of data transferred, network collisions may have a
significant impact on performance.

Secure VPN Connection
DMI recommends Microsoft RDP (Administrative Terminal Services access) access using
a Cisco VPN transport solution. Direct RDP connections are not recommended. Other
VPN or connection solutions will be reviewed by DMI. Split tunneling is required.
Additional charges may be incurred from DMI to provide support using non-Cisco VPN
transports.

Ports 20 and 21 (FTP and FTP Data), 443 (HTTPS), 1433 and 2433 (SQL Server), and
3389 (RDP) should be open to PBI at a minimum to effectively support the application.
Additionally, remote disk mounting (Windows 2003 Server and higher) should be enabled
for transferring files.

If split tunnels cannot be supported, splitting HTTPS is required for Web training sessions.

DMI Security Guidelines
To provide timely support, the following security rights are required by DMI staff
members on your Windows Server and SQL Server.

Windows Server Rights SQL Server Server Roles SQL Server Database Roles
Local Administrator System Administrator db_owner
Desktop access (preferred) (If DMI does not create the
Ability to install software Database Creator database)
                              Security Administrator
                              Bulk Insert Administrator

The SQL Server must be configured for mixed mode authentication.
It is recommended the SQL Server instance for PBI is the default instance.

                                                                      50 Berkshire Court
