                      SURVEY TRAINING INSTITUTE
                                  THE BACKGROUND

       Survey of India, the National Survey Organisation of Government of India was established in
1767. In the last two and a quarter centuries, the entire country has been mapped with utmost
dedication and hard work by a distinguished line of surveyors.

       In Post-independence India, the developmental activities and need for defence preparedness
brought urgent need to impart training to officers and staff in various aspects of surveying and
mapping with state-of-the-art technologies. With this objective, the Centre for Survey Training and
Map Production was established at Hyderabad in 1967 with a Human Resource Development
Institute within Survey of India under technical assistance from United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP). The Survey Training Institute, thus raised on 6th May, 1967 is now recognized
as the prestigious training establishment in the field of Surveying and Cartography to impart training
to the Officers and Staff of Survey of India and other Government Organisations, Private Individuals,
and Scholars from other Afro-Asian countries.

       STI’s courses are held in high esteem by Scientific Departments and Organisations. The fact
that more than a hundred batches of certain courses have been conducted by STI over the past 38 years
of its existence speaks volumes of its contribution to the profession of Surveying. Alumni of STI who
had undergone STI’s popular basic courses are today occupying high positions in various
organizations at home and abroad.

       The other Directorates of Survey of India located within the complex, viz., AP Geo-spatial Data
Centre, Wing of Maharashtra GDC, Southern Printing Group and GIS & Remote Sensing
Directorate are rendering faculty assistance as and when required. Besides, Survey Training Institute
engages experts from external sources especially in the field of management and remote sensing, for
faculty support.
       The facilities of STI Library, abounding in authentic books on surveying, cartography and
various allied subjects are available to all trainees. Internet facility has now been provided in the
library, thus facilitating access for trainees and faculty to the resources available in the electronic
media. Furnished hostels for trainees with boarding facilities are situated in the campus which is
sprawling, lush green; and the undulating terrain endowed with flora and fauna is delightful for a
person with an eye for surveying.

                                              Foreword
                                            *************
                Until recently, maps in paper form have been the mainstay for a wide variety
        of applications and decision-making. This trend is fast changing, as more and more
        spatially referenced data and information, on a wider variety of topics or themes, are
        being produced, stored, transferred, manipulated and analysed in digital form.

                 In setting this trend in the country, as well as in certain other Afro-Asian
        countries, STI has played a vital role by visualizing and acting upon, sufficiently
        early, the need for human resource development in the upgrowing technologies.
        Modules encompassing acquisition of spatial data in digital form using GPS & Total
        Station and      their storage, analysis, manipulation & manoeuvre for digital
        cartography, Digital Photogrammetry & GIS have been, over the years, incorporated
        in the syllabi of STI courses in systematic progression, thus keeping pace with
        technology advancement.             Extensive use of satellite imagery and Mobile
        Mapping System for Mapping and Map-updation is being given the thrust now in
        appropriate courses.


                 S.T.I. is also undertaking courses for foreign participants under NSDI
        platform for the “Permanent Committee on Geographical Information in Asia Pacific
        (PCGIAP) Member Countries” in which the chairman of the committee of Group IV
        is the Surveyor General of India.

                 The syllabi of all the courses for this year have been given the “updation–
        effect”, although the necessary conventional lessons have been retained in our “basic
        courses” for their “basement-value” in building up survey concepts. Down-to-Earth
        practical exercises will continue to be the core of our courses.

                 We hope that the SOI officers, staff and also our clients from home and abroad
        will take optimum advantage of our endeavours.

                                     GENERAL INFORMATION

  i)      Scheduled courses will be conducted subject to sufficient number of trainees being available.

  ii)     Duration of a course will be as indicated against it in the “schedule of courses”. But the
          duration shown against individual modules in the syllabi is liable to change depending on
          various factors.

  iii) If the date of commencement of a course falls on a holiday, it will start on the next working
       day.

  iv) Eligibility Criteria for admission to different courses are relaxable at the discretion of the
      Director, STI.

  v)      Special / Customised courses shall be conducted in order to fulfill specific requirements of user
          organizations provided at least 6 trainees are sponsored for a particular course.

  vi) Nomination / Application for admission to a course should reach the Director, STI, normally 60
      days before the scheduled date of commencement of the Course. Trainees are advised to
      report in the Institute only on receiving confirmation about the allotment of seat.

  vii) Tuition Fee has to be paid in advance by Demand Draft drawn in favour of “The
       Establishment & Accounts Officer, Survey Training Institute, Survey of India” on
       Hyderabad Branch of any nationalized bank, preferably Union Bank of India. If the tuition fee is
       not paid in advance or simultaneously with joining, the trainee will not be admitted.

  viii) Requirement of Hostel Accommodation needs to be intimated to the Director, STI (Attention :
        Hostel Warden), sufficiently in advance through separate letter. Boarding and Lodging
        expenses for a trainee will be approximately Rs. 2,500/- per month, which is in addition to the
        tuition fee.

  ix) Non-departmental / private candidates also can be admitted to a course subject to availability
      of seats, fulfilling the eligibility criteria and payment of tuition fee fixed from time to time.
      Interested candidates should apply on the prescribed proforma given in this book.

  x)      Each trainee reporting for Courses involving field training outside the STI Campus should
          arrange for himself camp cots and bedding for use in the Camp which is normally established
          about 40 km away from Hyderabad. Similarly, the service of a cook will be available to the
          trainees, in the Camp; but necessary utensils, cookware and other provisions are to be
          arranged by the trainees themselves.
     xi) A foreign national seeking admission to a course in STI needs to be sponsored by the
         Government of his country or has to route his application through the Indian mission in his
         country.
