      6 January 2008
•A scourge for over 3,500 years
•Currently affects 23,000 villages in sub-Saharan Africa
•120 million people at risk
•Eradication efforts implemented beginning in 1986
Basic Understanding of Truth
(doctrine, answers “WHY”)
•Guinea worm life cycle

Principles Derived from Truth (answers “WHAT”)
•Prevent ingestion of larvae-infected water fleas
•Prevent adult female worm access to water supply

Applications
(answers “HOW”)
•Strain/filter water through skirt
•Prevent those with blisters from bathing in the water supply

                  Result
Guinea worm disease nearly eradicated without
                  developing a “cure”
“There are so many young people who wander
aimlessly … who were once warm in the faith,
but whose faith has grown cold. Many of them
wish to come back but do not know quite how
to do it. They need friendly hands reaching out
to them. With a little effort, many of them can
be brought back to feast again at the table of
the Lord. … Ours is a great and solemn duty to
reach out and help them, to lift them, to feed
them if they are hungry, to nurture their spirits
if they thirst for truth and righteousness.”

President Gordon B. Hinckley, October 1996
Why is this important, what can we do, and
              how do we do it?
• WHY? Doctrine
   – 2 Nephi 2:6-9
   – Mosiah 28:3
• WHAT to do? Principles: Faith, repentance, baptism,
Holy Ghost, endure to the end
   – Prevent active from becoming less active
   – Reclaim the less active (3 Nephi 18:32)
   – Teach the Gospel to those not of our faith (“After all that has
been said, the greatest and most important duty is to preach
the Gospel.” Joseph Smith. Teachings, page 113)
• HOW? Applications
   – Through revelation
   – Through priesthood keys
   – Through you (how important are the callings to which you
     have been set apart?)

“Area Seventies are requested to work with
stake presidents to achieve better
accountability for all young single adults
residing in their units. Efforts should be
made to identify, locate, and assume
shepherding responsibility for these young
single adults by following the guidelines in
the Church Handbook of Instructions,
Book 1, pages 125-128 (2006 revision).

“Forget yourself- start praying about the people you are to serve.”
President Henry B. Eyring. October 2007 General Conference

“Dear Gordon, I have your recent letter. I have only one suggestion:
Forget yourself and go to work.”
Letter from Bryant S. Hinckley, responding to a letter from young
Elder Gordon B. Hinckley in which he had indicated that he couldn’t
see the point in wasting his time and his father’s money in fruitless
missionary work. (Dew. Go Forward with Faith, page 64)
