Copper Canyon Motorcar Excursion
Possible scenarios - 2004
I am finally in contact with both U.S. Customs/Immigration (Homeland Security) and their Mexican
Counterparts in Presidio, Texas and Ojinaga, Mexico. They are both very helpful and at this point,
it appears that it is feasible to Set-On in Presidio, Texas and cross the border via the railroad.
Preliminary cost estimates are about $4.000 to $4,300 for one speeder with two people and
would include:
9 Days on the rails of FerroMex
23 Meals each for two people - Almost all meals in Mexico
8 nights in excellent quality hotels - two people - double occupancy
All tips and gratuities
Transportation to and from all hotels while on the rails
Fuel for speeders
A boat tour for two of Topolobampo harbor
This plan would eliminate the long drive from El Paso to Chihuahua and return with the
associated delays in getting automobile decals for entry. It would also add 332 miles of new track
(round trip) that we have never run before as well as giving us an opportunity to run our
motorcars from Central Texas to the Pacific Ocean (Sea of Cortez) and return.
At this point, even in a worse case scenario where we could not cross the border at Presidio, but
had to do as we have always done in the past, with an El Paso crossing and driving to
Chihuahua, The trip seems feasible as long as we have enough participants.
What I need to establish now is that we have enough interest to be able to proceed with a 2004
trip. I have detailed below what is called Plan A involving a Presidio border crossing and Plan B
which is driving from El Paso to Chihuahua. The hotels may be different than listed, as we have
found some new ones, but other than that, Plan B is the same as the 2003 trip.
I need to know the following:
1. Would you go regardless of plan A or B?
2. Would you go only on Plan A (or Plan B for that matter)?
3. What kind of motorcar and how many in your party?
Please answer as quickly as possible. I will soon be asking for a deposit if we have enough
interest to continue.
