DAY 1: the 19th Century Canberry village and the Duntroon connections

11.30 am to 4.30 pm
Duntroon dairy [11.30 to 12.30] • Duntroon woolshed [12.30 to 1.30] • catered lunch at
Commonwealth Place or the banks of the Lake Burley Griffin central Basin adjacent Blundell’s
Cottage [1.30 to 2.30 outside weather permitting] • [2.30 to 4.30] Mugga Mugga Symonston
[afternoon tea + guided tour by John Armes Assistant Director ACT Historic Places] • return to
University House [rest drinks + dinner]

This part of the tour will be centred around Duntroon, Mt Pleasant, Russell Hill and Mugga
Mugga. We will look at the 19th century tenant farms and outbuildings associated with
Duntroon Station, and the ‘Canberry’ village remnant buildings and tracks.

DAY 2: the 20th Century Federal Capital and the modernists

8.30 am to 4.00 pm
Catered picnic lunch on the banks of the Central Basin

This part of the tour will be centred around the central national area, and inner Canberra,
and we will look at the early Federal capital buildings and the work of the Canberra
modernists. We will start in the Acton area, which was the site of the first Capital
administration. Then we will make visits to modernist buildings

Then we will make visiti to the Moir and Sutherland houses of Forrest, Griffith and O’Connor;
the Institute of Anatomy Acton; and the Cuthbert Whitley buildings in Griffith, Forrest and
Barton. We will have internal access to the Kringas residence within the Manuka Fire Station
precinct.

Catered picnic lunch, probably on the banks of the Central Basin [South] NGA gardens. Then
a tour of some of the modernist houses of Moir & Sutherland, Robin Boyd, and the emigre
architects. At 4pm departure for Sydney.
