I Overview

Title : Formulation of sustainable energy development strategies
in the context of climate change

            Objective Recipients (14MSs)

    To strengthen the sustainable
         development of MSs
by assessing the role of nuclear
      and other energy options ;
     evaluating the resources for
     energy-related activities and
environmental concerns Lead Country : Korea

       Duration : 2007-2008

MEST ㅣ Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, Republic of Korea
II History of the project

The RCA energy project was launched in 1999 with
     RAS/0/028 entitled “Comparative Assessment of
     Electricity Generation Options”

Thereafter, several topics were covered including
mitigating GHG emissions, competitive electricity market
and indicators for sustainable energy development
      – These topics were important issues at that time
      – RCA energy project was designed to take a step by
        step approach toward sustainable energy
        development

The project was closed in 2008 & the final project
related to energy under the framework of RCA energy
     project

III Activities in 2008

         Activities

    Regional Activities
   - Regional Seminar, IAEA, Feb.,2008
   - Regional Training, ROK, May, 2008
   - Final Project Review Meeting,
     Thailand, Jan, 2009

                                  National seminars and training
                                 - National seminars were held to
                                   disseminate the information
                                 - National training course was
                                   conducted in Philippines
                                   (Aug, 2008)

MEST ㅣ Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, Republic of Korea
VI Output

    Development of scenarios
   - for sustainable energy strategy of each MS

    A cost benefit analysis
   - by assessing the role of nuclear power contributing
to the economic costs and the benefit taking into
     account Climate Change issues

MEST ㅣ Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, Republic of Korea
V Informative findings from
         the national studies

Conflicting of national, regional and global interests
in the energy planning with respect to
    environmentally sound sustainable energy
    development

The knowledge and capacities built up were
well appreciated as a useful backbone to
    address the conflicts

MEST ㅣ Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, Republic of Korea
VI Outcomes of the Project

Results of the project were actively incorporated
 into formulating sustainable energy development
plan especially facing high and volatile international
 energy prices

The capacities built up are useful in providing
specialist information for contributing to the national
positions in international climate debates and for
assisting in negotiations on climate change issues
