What causes it
It is an autoimmune disease with idiopathic causes too. The acetylcholine
receptors in the persons nervous system are lost from autoimmune attacks
and transmission of impulses for skeletal function is decreased leading to
weakness and fatigue.
Know the signs
Extreme muscular weakness and fatigue, facial muscle weakness especially
in the eyes (ptosis) ,mask like expression, dysarthria (inarticulate) and
dysphagia and peripheral weakness.
Know the complications that may occur
Aspiration and respiratory failure may occur but myasthenic crisis is a
complication that is peculiar to this disease. the signs of myasthenic crisis
sudden respiratory distress, signs of
ptosis,diplobia,dysohagia,tachycardia,anxiety and rapidly increasing
weakness of the trunk and the extremities.
Know the interventions for myasthenic crisis
Stop anticholinergic medication until respiration improves
Prostigmin I.V for treatment
Plasmapheresis to remove antiboies
Tensilon test to differentiate between cholinergic and myasthenic crisis
Airway management including oxygen therapy,suctioning to remove
Maintain a high fowler position
