(for ArcView 9, and ArcEditor, and ArcInfo 9)

Duration: 2 days (16 hours)

Overview:
This two-day course is a bridging course between the ArcGIS Desktop I: Getting Started with GIS,
ArcGIS Desktop II: Tools and Functionality and the ArcGIS Desktop III: GIS Workflows and Analysis
course and the more advanced courses provided by GIMS (Pty) Ltd. The purpose of the ArcGIS
Desktop I: Getting Started with GIS, ArcGIS Desktop II: Tools and Functionality course is to lay the
foundation for using the ArcView, ArcEditor, or ArcInfo technology (understanding principles of GIS;
what functionality is available; which buttons to press).

This course focuses on developing the spatial reasoning of student. The training is conducted in a
workshop fashion where students will be provided with several challenge exercises. Every example
has an object and a desired outcome. Students are welcome to bring a subset of their own data to
work through in place.

Those completing this course will be able to:
     • Design a new geodatabase using data from other formats (see below).
Insure that the properties of all the different formats is correct (METADATA) before you
           export it to the geodatabase
Also included is an extra piece of paper with all the providers (where the data is from)
     • Include data currently in MSExcel into ArcGIS.
Join Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to shapefile
           Manipulate the displayed fields
Convert joined data to a feature class
     • Work with Microsoft Access tables containing lat/long data of schools.
Analyse the data in the Microsoft Access table (lat/long data is in two different datums)
Display the lat/long data in ArcMap
Convert all the clinic data into one feature class
Relate the polio from an additional table to the clinics feature class
     • Scan a map and georeference the scanned map.
           Different raster formats
           Identify reference points
           Projection

(During this exercise a quarter of a 1: 50 000 map will be scanned and georefenced)
     • Georeference a map and do heads-up digitising.
           Adding attributes e.g. Calculating area
           Adding labels, annotation
           Compiling the map
     • Convert CAD in feature classes.
Assign a coordinate system to CAD data
Georefence the CAD and create a wld file
Convert the different CAD layers to feature classes
     • Capturing new features (erven) from Sg diagrams with coordinates.
           Inputting the coordinates
           Presenting the features spatially
     • Work with GPS data.
Set-up requirements for GPS’s to ensure optimal capturing of data for use in ArcGIS
           Capture photos of the points
           Downloading data from the GPS
Presenting data captured from a GPS
Hyperlink photos to spatial point features

Who should attend?
Participants who have completed ArcGIS Desktop I: Getting Started with GIS and ArcGIS II: Tools
and Functionality (for ArcView 9, ArcEditor 9 and ArcInfo 9) and that have the additional need to
convert and manipulate existing data (not ready for GIS usage) within companies, to be made usable
in ArcGIS.

Prerequisites and recommendations:
This course is for those who have completed ArcGIS Desktop I: Getting Started with GIS and ArcGIS
II: Tools and Functionality. If the prerequisite course is not completed, a participant should have
comparable experience with ArcGIS before taking this course. The course also provides participant
with the fundamental ArcGIS knowledge and experience needed to enrol in ArcGIS Desktop III:
Workflow and Analysis.

Software Used in Course:
ArcView 9.3.; ArcEditor 9.3; ArcInfo 9.3
