So Ho (Small Office/Home Office) businesses are leading the nation in job growth opportunities. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, it is estimated that as many as 20% of new small business enterprises are operated out of the owner’s home. These forums, co-sponsored by the City of Fort Wayne and the Women’s Enterprise, a program of Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau, and the Northeast Indiana Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will give people the information that they need to start or grow a business in this community.

¨ Representatives from the City of Fort Wayne and Allen County will be available to discuss zoning regulations, economic development, neighborhood concerns, and Board of Health issues. ¨ The Women’s Enterprise and the NE Indiana SBDC will conduct minipre business assessments and schedule individual counseling sessions with people needing specific help with business planning. ¨ Network with persons who have developed successful home-based businesses and learn how they balance work with family or other personal responsibilities. ¨ Meet others that have started their businesses in their homes and are now operating in industrial or retail locations. ¨ Pick up calendars, flyers, and other materials about other events in town that can help your business grow! ¨ Meet representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration and find out which programs will best fit your needs.

12.2 million workers who did part or fulltime work from their homes represent 9% of the 135-million member U.S. workforce, or about one worker out of every 11 in the United States. About 6.5 million self -employed individuals-more than half of the nation’s self-employed– do some work at home. This represents almost 5% of the entire labor force. Of the self-employed who operate home-based businesses 1.7 million are managers and professionals. Another 720,000 are in the construction industry and 532,000 are in retail trades.
