A Monthly Publication of the Riverside County Law Library
while back a buddy asked me about the divorce process and what problems he might run into if he were to seek a marital split. Generally I have no problem doling out advice (being an information god, and all). The problem I have is giving out bad news and in the case of his impending divorce, REALLY bad news! See, in my opinion if you’ve never been embroiled in a really nasty divorce then you’re way ahead of the game. For those of you who have been there you know that there are few experiences that can cause grey hairs like a good old fashioned scratch your eyes out, screaming and yelling, hair-pulling divorce to bring out the best in people. Anyway, I told my buddy what I suspected he was getting himself into and he decided to not go ahead with his plans. Smart guy. But now maybe you’re looking to make a new start and are seeking some friendly advice whether you should venture into the world of family court. If so, I suggest you educate your decisions by coming into the Riverside County Law Library and take a look at our many family law crystal ball-esque books such as Divorce and Money (West), Chapter 13 Bankruptcy (Nolo Press), Police Intervention into Family Crisis (Davis Pub.), Child Custody Litigation and Practice (CEB), Assigning Retirement Benefits in Divorce (ABA), Bassett on California Community Property Law (West), Valuing Professional Practices and Licenses (Aspen), and Dividing Pensions and Other Employee Benefits in California Divorces (CEB). So whether you’re looking to divorce someone or just need some hard-core advice on life, come on down to the RCLL and we’ll point you in the right direction (or somewhere close to it).

Q: I'm about to get married to someone who has substantial credit
card debt and I wonder if her creditors can access savings of mine after we are married?
A: While we have several really great resources that can help you, I
suggest you first start with California Practice Guide (Rutter) Family Law (beginning on page 8-178: Marital Property Debts Liability and Reimbursement Claims).
