JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Staff Nurse
Grade: Band 5
Managerially & Professionally
Accountable to : The Director
Reports To: Unit Manager
Key Working Relationships
All members of Marillac multi-professional team, including Consultant, GP,
Therapists and Supporting workers. Marillac Administration staff, Social Service,
Primary Care Trusts & Review panel members. External Health & Social care
personnel including medical/nursing specialists. Housekeeping, Laundry,
Catering and Maintenance services.
Job Summary
1. To be responsible for the assessment of care needs for people with
neurological disability and the development, implementation and
evaluation of programmes of care for all residents residing on the
unit.
2. To work according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of
Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a
named nurse for a defined group of residents and take
responsibility for:
• protecting and supporting the health of all individual
residents.
• The assessment of holistic care and health education
needs
• The development, implementation and regular evaluation
of programmes of care for those residents.
3. To be designated to take charge of the unit occasionally in the
absence of the unit manager.
4. To assist the unit manager in the Induction of care staff .
5. To positively promote The Marillac philosophy to caring, and
contribute to achieving The Marillac objectives.
6. To provide and receive complex, sensitive information, adopting
appropriate communication strategies.
7. To provide guidance for Carers, so that they develop their
competence and skills which enable them to become competent
supporting staff.
8. To participate and implement induction and training programmes
for Care assistants.
9. To act as Designated Fire Officer and on-call Nurse for the Marillac
occasionally.
1. Resident Care Responsibilities
1. To maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementation and
evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing
incorporating a holistic approach to care.
2. To follow nursing management strategies for residents with complex
physical and sensory disabilities, seeking specific/specialist advice when
appropriate.
3. To inform the Unit Manager of any changes in residents
health/social/financial circumstances.
4. To participate in Case conferences and placement reviews.
5. To follow nursing practices of the unit comply with the Marillac nursing
policies and procedures.
6. To promote a multidisciplinary approach to care in collaboration with staff
nurses, carers, therapists and other health and social personnel.
7. To provide education to a resident and their carers as required when a
need has been identified.
8. To provide information which enables residents to make choices, this may
include distressing or emotional circumstances.
9. To complete resident documentation correctly, appropriately and in a
timely manner.
10. To maintain a safe unit environment and work with Carers to produce a
care environment which is conducive to safe, therapeutic and ethical
practice.
11. To supervise Care Assistants in the delivery of care.
2. Professional Development and Educational Responsibilities
1. To develop own teaching skills and participate in education programs.
2. To assist with teaching sessions for Carers to develop their competence.
3. To assist in providing a suitable learning environment for Carers and act
as a preceptor in the supervision and teaching of NVQ/Student Nurses.
4. To attend Marillac orientation programmes and mandatory training
sessions and annual updates.
5. To maintain a professional profile and develop skills, knowledge and
competencies adhering to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and
Marillac Policies and Procedures.
6. To be accountable for your practice and ensure that you are competent to
practice.
7. To communicate with colleagues keeping them up to date with clinical
events.
8. To be appraised at least annually.
9. To participate in clinical supervision as appropriate.
10. To develop computer literacy skills and work towards developing
computer skills in relation to resident records.
3. Research & Development Responsibilities
1. To assist nursing practice in line with relevant research and evidence
based practice.
2. To work with the Deputy Director in development and implementing best
practice
3. To deliver care based on best practice.
4. To assist in the development and implementation of nursing practice
guidelines and standards and policies within the Marillac.
4. Audit, Quality and Risk Management Responsibilities.
1. To maintain awareness, with regard to The National Care Standards for
Younger Adults with Physical Disabilities who reside within The Marillac.
2. To assist in the setting and monitoring of measurable standards of care and
be responsible and accountable for maintaining standards.
3. To maintain awareness of the national, professional and local quality issues
relevant to the delivery of nursing services, e.g. NICE guidelines, No
Secrets, POVA, Consent to treatments, NMC guidelines.
4. To uphold quality initiatives that will improve ‘customer care’ and enhance
the communication between residents, staff and visitors.
5. To assist in the audit process for monitoring and reviewing nursing quality
and ensure that the impact of the ‘Essence of care’ Benchmarking process
and implementation are positive markers in resident care.
6. To handle complaints in accordance with Marillac policy.
7. To conduct ‘clean environment’ audits along side Housekeeping services.
8. To have an understanding of Health & Safety requirements to ensure a safe
working environment. To bring any identified risk to the attention of senior
management following the Incident, Serious Incidents and Near Misses
reporting policy and procedure.
9. To comply with The Marillac Fire precautions and procedures for evacuation
and emergency resuscitation.
5. Resource Management Responsibilities
1. To develop an awareness of budgeting, exercising care and adhering to
current policy in the use of staff, ordering equipment and materials. To
assist in the planning and monitoring of staffing requirements.
2. In the absence of Unit Manger/Senior Staff Nurse to bring any changes to
the attention of the Director.
3. To report sickness and absence of staff, following Marillac policy and
procedures.
