We require an enthusiastic, dynamic smoking cessation worker to join us.
You should be friendly, forward thinking and innovative in your thinking for
this new challenging role within Children’s Services.

You will be working directly with young people aged 12-18 years across
education, youth justice and other youth services, targeting young people
who are expressing a desire to stop smoking. You will also provide support
and training to staff involved in the provision of joint group across a
variety of settings including schools and youth services within the Falkirk
Council area.

It is desirable that you be educated to degree level or hold a relevant
professional qualification in teaching, Social Work (CQSW or DipSW),
Community Education or Nursing with good communication skills, able to
provide evidence of relevant experience within a community setting and be
willing to partake in further training relevant to the post.

              JOB DESCRIPTION

SECTION A

Job Title:   Smoking Cessation worker for Young People

Service:     Education Services

Section:     Integrated Children’s Services Team.

Location:    Haypark Business Centre, Marchmont Avenue, Polmont.

Grade:       Grade G


SECTION B    Job Purpose
             The function of this post is to work jointly with identified
             local schools and services for young people within the
             Falkirk Council area by establishing high quality group
             and one-to-one work for young people between and
             including the ages of 16-24 years who are expressing a
             desire to stop smoking.

SECTION C    Key Responsibilities
             To work directly with groups of young people offering
             therapeutic and practical support in group and individual
             settings.

             To support and work with other identified professionals
             who are currently involved in working with young people
             and establish appropriate young-people centred and easily
             accessible smoking cessation services within Falkirk.

             To work in partnership with young people developing
             methods of participation, consultation and user
             involvement, giving a voice to young people involved in
             smoking cessation.

             To work collaboratively with partner agencies i.e. health
             service, social work and other identified agencies
             involved with young people.

             To work collaboratively with the Smoke Free Homes
             Worker to ensure a co-ordinated approach.
            To plan, implement and evaluate group work for young
            people and smoking cessation.

            To design and deliver staff training on smoking cessation
            and young people.

            To represent and promote Falkirk Council

            To provide for the needs of young people, within the
            parameters of the service, in a flexible, dynamic and non-
            judgemental way.

            To maintain and update knowledge and skills in relation
            to tobacco and smoking.


            To work within Falkirk Council’s Policies, Guidelines
            and Procedures

            To participate in service audit, standard settings, research
            and quality assurance as required.

            To represent issues of young people’s smoking and health
            at inter-agency fora, seminars etc.

            Participate in developmental working groups as
            appropriate.

            To undertake any other duties assigned by the line
            manager as appropriate to the grade.

SECTION D   Accountability

            The post holder will be responsible for the identification
            and resourcing of appropriate materials to enhance
            support
            programmes for young people.
            The post holder will be accountable to and be managed
            and supervised by the Integrated Children’s Services
            Team.


SECTION E   Knowledge, Skills and Experience
            The post holder will be expected to function as a
            competent practitioner who has an interest in young
            people and issues of young people’s smoking.
            The post holder will have a high level of knowledge of
            current evidence base, strategy and policy and delivering
            smoking cessation training to young people.
            The post holder will be able to provide evidence of
            relevant knowledge and experience within a community
            setting, including health inequality issues and be willing
            to partake in post-registration education relevant to the
            post.

SECTION F   Demands
            Respond to referrals to the service within determined
            timescales according to service standards.

            Assess the needs of young people at high risk to
            physical/mental health as a result of their smoking and
            report to their manager. Have the ability to apply an
            agreed programme of care utilising all available resources
            taking into consideration the lifestyle, race, gender and
            cultural background and ensure involvement with the
            individual, family, carers and significant others.

            Utilise appropriate risk assessment tools in order to
            identify actual and potential risks and implement
            appropriate interventions.

            Empower young people to take responsibility for their
            health, well being and future lifestyle by practising in an
            open manner. Thereby ensuring young people have the
            relevant information to participate in the decision about
            their care.

            Demonstrate knowledge of health and well being
            outcomes and experiences highlighted within the
            Curriculum for Excellence.
            Participate in planning, priority setting and decision
            making to ensure that they meet the needs of young
            people.


            Demonstrate the ability to function competently as a
            member of the multi-disciplinary team and understand
            and acknowledge the role and function of other partner
            agencies.


            Jointly develop the philosophy and objectives of the
            service.

            Maintain updated information on new
            treatments/procedures.

SECTION G   Communication and Contacts
                             Work in partnership with other appropriate agencies and
                             organisations within Falkirk in the effective and efficient
                             provision of the service, reporting regularly to Falkirk
                             Children’s Commission

                             Collate, analyse and report related outcomes and outputs.
                             providing activity data to Falkirk’s Community Planning
                             Partnership

                             Liaise with all professionals involved in the care of young
                             people referred to the service.

SECTION H                    Environment
                             The post holder will operate within a multi-disciplinary
                             centre based team, providing services both within that
                             location and the wider community. This will involve the
                             post holder working from partnership offices and
                             undertaking home visits.

There may be a requirement to work occasional irregular hours
