                                   LESSON PLAN
                         The evening fable by J.Baltvilks
AREAS INVOLVED  English, arts
GROUPS      AND 1 - 4th graders / 60min.
TIMING
GENERAL AIMS         To find out about Latvians and their culture,
                                To know about J. Baltvilks, his poems and his style of
                                 writing
                                To introduce students with J. Baltvilks poem “The evening
                                 tale”.
                                To improve students’ knowledge about Latvian folksongs
                                 and Krishjanis Barons;
                                To encourage students’ creative work, creating fun for
                                 themselves and others.
                                To make the understanding of giant’s life.
                                To stimulate students’ understanding that all the beings,
                                 creatures act similarly in the world.
CONTENTS                        Paper and pen
                                Felt-tip pens
                                Stickers
                                The map of Europe
                                The picture of a giant, a kid and an adult.
                                Poem
                                The picture-cards
SHORT                       1.   The introduction with Latvia and its location.
DESCRIPTION         OF      2.   The introduction with a poet, writer and naturalist J.
                                 Baltvilks.
ACTIVITIES                  3.   A picture of a giant, a pygmy and an adult are stuck on the
                                 board. Students’ task is to find out the giant.
                            4.   The students are asked several questions: “Do you sleep?”
                                 “How/Where do you sleep?” “Do the birds, animals sleep”
                                 “Does the giant ever sleep?”
                            5.   Students are introduced with the poem “The evening fable”
                                 and the main character “giant”.
                            6.   Students are given the picture-cards which they will have to
                                 put in the right order as they hear the events in the poem.
                            7.   Students have to listen to a poem carefully because they
                                 have to put the pictures in the right order.
                                                     Vakara stāsts

                                                Zini jau, ko kaķis dara,
                                                  kad viņš gulēt iet:
                                                  kažociņu izmazgā,
                                                   acis aizver ciet.

                                                Zini jau, ko putns dara,
                                                   kad viņš gulēt iet:
                                               aizbāž knābīti aiz spārna,
                                                    acis aizver ciet.

                                                to, kā milzis gulēt iet?
                                               Tev par viņu pastāstīšu,
                                                  paklausies mazliet.

                                               Milža darbus pastrādājis,
                                                 milzis pārnāk mājā.
                                                 Izstaipa un atpūtina
                                                  milža rokas, kājas.

                                                Paņem milžu grāmatu,
                                                   lasa bilžu stāstu.
                                                 Izlasījis noliek nost,
                                                   ņemas gultu klāt.

                                           Gulta milzim-kāds tur brīnums!-
                                                  tā kā puse Rīgas.
                                             Un pie gultas-tāds kā māja-
                                                 galdiņš milzim sīks.

                                                Vēl ir milzim krūzīte,
                                                 tāda maza, maziņa,
                                                  kurā ielēkt varētu
                                                kādas piecas kaziņas.

                                               Krūzītē viņš ielej pienu,
                                                    izdzer to un teic:
                                             "Ai, kāds milzīgs nogurums,
                                                  jāiet gulēt beidzot."

                                                Zini tu, ko milzis dara,
                                                  kad viņš gulēt iet?
                                                Galvu liek uz spilvena,
                                                   acis aizver ciet.
                            8. Students learn a new game “The giant and the pygmy”.
                            9. Students play the game “The giant and the pygmy”.
                            10. At the end of the lesson students draw the giant and the
                                room of the giant. If students manage it in class we stick the
                                works on the board, if some of them don’t manage they can
                                continue it at home.
EVALUATION              - Students know where Latvians is located.
                        - Students know about J. Baltvilks and his work
                        - Students understand that all the beings need a proper sleep
                        - Students can work creatively on a theme “The evening tale”
                        - Students learn the game “The giant and the pygmy”
