Trainee Status (Standard) Apprentices, trainees, beginners, and learners who are undergoing training merely to learn the duties of a job and to become qualified for employment are not employees. They will not be paid for their training time. Individuals are trainees if all of the following apply: (1) The training, even though it includes the actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training that would be given in a vocational school (2) The training is for the individual's benefit (3) The individual does not displace regular employees or fill a vacant position (4) The company derives no immediate advantage from the individual's activities, and occasionally its operations are actually impeded (5) The individual is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the training period (6) The company and the individual understand that the individual is not entitled to wages for the time spent training.
