					LITERACY ACROSS THE CURRICULUM POLICY

   Ofsted findings suggest the following
Literacy Across the Curriculum is good when
 Senior managers are actively involved in the planning and
          monitoring.
 Audits and action plans are rigorous
 Monitoring focuses on a range of approaches, e.g. classroom
observation, work scrutiny as well as formal tests
 Time is given to training, its dissemination and embedding
 Schools work to identified priorities

The purpose of this Literacy policy is to enable all our staff to have consistent
expectations of the students’ use and understanding of Literacy across the
curriculum and to promote the development of each individual student’s
Literacy skills. Each department can make a contribution towards improving
Literacy skills so that students become confident at tackling reading, writing
and speaking and listening in any context. All Faculties will incorporate
relevant aspects of the policy and all subjects will use the agreed notation,
formats and method when relevant.

As a College we aim to:-

 Highlight and develop links between all subjects and Literacy ensuring
Faculties are using framework objectives in medium and long-term
              plans.
 Ensure consistent approaches to Literacy are used across the
curriculum in the classroom especially with relation to spelling, reading
              and writing non-fiction;
 Build students’ confidence in transferring skills that they have learning
              English.
 Suggest Literacy focus on a regular basis though a Literacy Bulletin.
 Offer coaching and INSET that embeds good literacy practice.

In order to achieve these aims we believe that the teaching staff need to be
monitored in the following ways:

 Templates of effective Literacy plans/departmental policies need to be
              scrutinised by the Literacy Co-ordinator
 Word scrutiny to be carried out by the Assessment co-ordinator/SLT
 The effectiveness to Literacy teaching will be monitored by SLT on
              Literacy Observation forms.

And students need to be encouraged to:-

 Learn to spell subject specific vocabulary including complex
              polysyllabic words.
 Reading for a verity of purposes and be able to use appropriate
              strategies.
 Write appropriately in the full range of text types
