                    What Your Kit Contains:
         1. The front-page with all the details about the design.
         2. A table-of-contents and general instructions for organizing and creating your
            counted cross-stitch picture.
         3. A full color printout of the finished design in ‘virtual’ stitches to use as a guide.
Please note this picture is shown after conversion to cross stitch. So, what you
see is the finished article after stitching is complete.
         4. The complete pattern as a set of numbered cross stitch charts (Pages 8 to 15) in
full color. These charts are designed for printing and are enlarged for easy
            reading.
         5. Same as Step 4, but in black & white (Pages 16 to 23).
         6. The ‘Color Key’ for your Thread Organizer, listed in order from the lightest
            through to the darkest colors.
         7. The ‘Shopping List’ of DMC threads with their serial numbers, symbols, and
required thread lengths shown against each DMC thread.

Page 2
               Assembling the charts:
         1. Print out whichever set of charts you wish to use (starting with Page 8 for color,
or Page 16 for black & white).
         2. Lay out the different pages to form the pattern. If you are unsure where any of
the pages go, use the full-color printout (Page 7) as a guide.
         3. Use a pair of sharp scissors to remove the excess white paper borders. Make
sure all the lines meet each other properly. Glue/stick the different pieces of the
chart together to form one larger chart.
         Additional Requirements
In addition to your downloaded charts, you’ll need to obtain the following:
         1. DMC threads. The thread that you’ll be using is known as stranded cotton; it is
a thread that splits down into 6 individual strands which are loosely twisted
            together.
Your Shopping List will show you all the different colors by numbers and also the
lengths of threads for each different shade that you’ll need to finish the design.
For this design you’ll use only two strands at a time. Always cut the threads to a
length of no more than 50cm (19½”).
         2. Fabric. Ivory or light colored Zweigart Aida fabric – 14 count. On Aida fabrics a
single cross stitch will use four small holes in the fabric and one block of the
weave. (See Fig. A below). On Aida fabrics one square of the chart represents
one stitch of the design. The size that you’ll need to buy will depend on the size
of the design; you can get this from Page 1 above.
Remember to add on at least 2.5cm (1”) on at all sides for framing purposes.
         3. Tapestry needle. You’ll need a size 24 tapestry needle to stitch a 14 count
fabric. Note: A tapestry needle is preferred to an embroidery needle because the
end of the needle is blunt and passes between the threads, not through them.
         4. Embroidery hoop or frame (optional). This is actually a pair of hoops (either
plastic or wood) that fit together and is used to gently stretch your cross stitch
fabric while you sew. Stretching is a good idea as it keeps your work flat and
even and also makes it easier to stitch. Always remove your hoop when you are
not stitching as it can leave marks on the fabric.
         Making a Thread Organiser
While you are waiting for the DMC threads to arrive, you can make yourself a
thread organizer as follows (see the picture of a completed thread organizer
         below):
         1. For each page of the thread organizer you first need a piece of light card 11”
            long (27cm) and 4” wide (10cm).
         2. Print out the DMC “Color Key” thread list page(s) - starting at Page 24.

Page 3
         3. On each color key page, draw a vertical line, 2¾” (7cm) in from the left hand
side of the page. Cut along the line and retain the color key part of the page.
         4. Glue the color key page on top of the light cardboard, with their right-hand
            edges together.
         5. Punch a series of holes into the left-hand side of the cardboard, adjacent to each
            different color.
         6. Take the shopping list and write each symbol next to the different colors. All
listed colors contain a symbol, but the darker colors are too dark for the symbol
to show clearly, which is why you will need to mark them alongside.
         7. After all the different threads have been purchased according to the shopping
list, start to sort out the thread organiser by measuring the required lengths of
            the different DMC threads.
E.g. DMC 3024 123.2” or 313.0cm. Attach this length of thread to the thread
organiser by making a slip knot through the hole next to the relevant color.

         Before You Start Stitching
Iron the fabric tightly to take out any creases that may have resulted from the
         packaging of this product.
It is always advisable to finish off all the raw edges of the cloth (fabric) by zigzag
stitching it or put masking tape around the sides to stop the threads from
         unravelling/pulling.
During stitching we recommend the use of a frame or embroidery hoop to keep an
         even tension on your fabric.

Page 4
              Familiarize yourself with the chart.
Locate the centre square of your chart
and the centre square of the fabric.
This is where you should place your
         first stitch (see Figs. 1 & 2).
         Stitching Your Pattern
For Aida fabrics we advise that all full
cross stitches are completed first and
in the order of dark to light colors.
         To begin stitching:
         1. Select your first color (the center square color) and cut off a length of thread no
            more than 50cm long.
         2. The cut off length of thread contains 6 strands, but you only need 2 strands for
your cross stitch pattern. Therefore separate the thread into three pairs of
            strands.
         3. Now thread the needle and you are ready to start.
         4. Always try to work stitches of the same shade area at the same time.
         5. Do not move to areas more than 2.5cm (1 in.) away, this makes subsequent
            stitching more difficult.
         6. When filling large areas, work in rows (Fig A).
                                                                      7. Work from left to
                                                                         right or right to left
                                                                         but always stitch in
                                                                         the same direction
                                                                         and complete the
                                                                         cross in the same
                                                                         direction.

         8. Start and finish each stitched area by passing the
needle through the back of the stitches already
            worked. (Fig 4).
         Displaying Your Finished Picture
When you have finished your picture you will probably want to frame it and either
display it in your own home or give it away as a gift to someone special.
You can have this done by a professional framing service or you might like to carry
out the task yourself. If you decide to do it yourself, you must first prepare your
         picture for framing.

Page 5
There are two ways you can do this: by using either self-adhesive mounting board
or hardboard, whichever board you choose, the most important issues are fabric
         tension and straightness.
Cut the board to the dimensions as shown on your colored illustration.
Note: The stitched area is not always the size quoted on the illustration as we may
recommend use of a picture mount or to leave fabric space
         around the design.
Place your picture centrally over the board and then:
Self-Adhesive Board - Smooth out all the air bubbles.
Wrap the surplus fabric over the edges and tape down with
masking tape or cut the fabric to the board edge.
Hardboard - Insert pins into top edge, pull the fabric taut
and insert pins into bottom or opposite edge. Repeat this
process for other edges. Using strong thread, secure the
back by lacing the fabric with tension, shown in Fig 5. The
         design can now be framed.
