OBJECTIVES
Student will examine the reasons for Europeans’ voyages of exploration by researching
the commercial revolution that occurred in the 16th century.

NOTES
1. The Commercial Revolution was a period of improved business practices
2. Monopoly allowed a company to establish total economic control
3. The Columbian Exchange was the transfer of plants, animals, and diseases
between Europe, Asia, and Africa
4. Many employers sought a Northwest Passage that would have provided a shortcut
through North America that would connect the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans
5. The Protestant Reformation was a religious movement that began as an effort to
reform the Catholic Church
6. In 1588 the Spanish Armada, a fleet of war ships assembled by King Philip II of
Spain to overthrow England’s Protestant Queen Elizabeth.
7. A Charter is a document from the king, giving permission to set up a colony in the
Americas

1. Prince Henry of Portugal sponsored voyages to explore the coast of Africa.
2. Columbus believed he could reach Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean.
3. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella disapproved of the way Columbus governed
