                             Multimedia Handbook guideline

   1. Objective
The objective of the multimedia handbook is to provide the SMEs with useful information and tools
to promote the life cycle thinking philosophy for products and the services.
The multimedia handbook contains the following ten sections:

   1. Interested Parties registration
   2. Self evaluation questionnaire (ENEA)
   3. Downloadable general and technical documents
   4. Certification and training system
   5. Examples of application of PDT and LCA integrated approach
   6. Searchable data base for standards
   7. Searchable data base for good practices
   8. Searchable data base for courses
   9. FAQ
   10. Other useful stuff

   2. Interested Parties registration
The interested parties’ registration has the aim to tailor the multimedia handbook to the needs of
representatives of SMEs. Organizations or persons who have registered as “interested parties”, will
have the opportunity to improve the multimedia services by providing their feedback to the project
coordinator. At the same time, the “interested parties” will be informed on every event considered
useful, such as new e-learning courses, workshops and conferences, certification opportunity, etc.
The registration form requires filling in a Minimum Data Set with the following fields:
 The name, that is the organization name.
 The field of activity is the main field in which the organization is working.
 The contact, is the name of the person in charge of responding to DEPUIS
 The interest for the courses and/or for the certification allows the opportunity to
be informed only on the related information and/or events.
 İn the newsletters field is possible to accept both to receive the DEPUIS newsletter
and to send information about DEPUIS events through the newsletter services
provided by the interested parties organization.
 Number of associated provides with the information on how many SMEs could be
                informed through their association.
 Web site of the interested party organization.
 The interest to have their own data published in the DEPUIS web site.
 Any additional notes considered necessary by the interested party.

   3. Self evaluation questionnaire
The self-evaluation questionnaire is composed of seven sections. The first section aims at the
identification of the questionnaire’s users (only for statistical analysis), the other ones are the
 Interoperability to make SMEs aware of the problems related to the interoperability
                between different hardware/software systems
 Data archiving to make SMEs aware of the long term management of their own data
 Environmental data management to make SMEs aware of the issues related to the
management of process data, for a correct evaluation of the environmental impact of
               their production
 Materials data availability to make SMEs aware of the problems related to the
management and the recovery of materials data for the environmental impact
evaluation, as well as the design of new more environmental friendly products
 Knowledge of existing standards to make SMEs aware of the existence of
international standards, which could be implemented, in order to suite their needs on
               the product data management
 Training, qualification and certification in order to verify the potential interest to
simple training for their own personnel or o to have a qualification/certification
system, so that they could ask for qualified consultants who can help them to
introduce product data technology in their own enterprise.

   4. Downloadable general and technical documents
İn this area the users will find a data base with a user friendly interface, where they could download
documents considered important for both fields of PDT and LCT. Some documents are general and
transversal for any field of application and for any user; others are more specific and technical,
devoted to experts.

   5. Certification and training system
İn this area the schema for the certification and training system can be found. There will be different
certification schema related to the different users’ class. The section will be always in progress,
because is strictly related both to the interested parties needs and to the international agreement on
these new skills with the ISO TC184 SC4 and the ISO TC 207 SC5 chairs.

   6. Examples of application of PDT and LCA integrated approach
İn this area the users can find examples of the use of integrated approach of PDT and LCA. It will
help people to identify the opportunity to cover other areas, as far as personal effort is put into the
implementation of existing standards. An example is related to the construction of a building and
the evaluation of its environmental impact. The input data are the following:
Design of 180m2 house
Designer can choose between:
 Wooden frame and wooden walls
 Steel frame and wooden walls
 Steel frame and concrete walls
 Wood frame and brick walls
Unit of function, CO2 release per m2 of house
Raw material production, final products fabrication, transportation and removal will be considered.

   7. Searchable data base for standards
This potentially very powerful data base contains the minimum data set for the main standards. The
Minimum Data Set (MDS) provides the basic information necessary to understand if the standard is
of any interest for the user. The MDS contain the following fields:
 Standard number for easy search on the web for additional information
             Title of the standard
 Business sectors addressed by the standards
             Purpose of the standard
 Objectives of the standardization activity
 Users interested to the use of standards
 Benefits related to the application of the standards
 Contacts, such as the editor or the team developing the standard
 Web site, where more information on the standard can be found, such as the one
promoted by the developers of the standard
 Downloadable documents related to the development or the application of the
 Comments eventually necessary to clarify one of the above fields
For the time being, the data base will be compiled with the main standards, which are promoted by
the partners, but it could be further implemented by the ISO TC 184 SC4 international experts.

   8. Searchable data base for good practices
İn this area the users will find the examples of application of the Product Data Technology, as well
as, the Life Cycle Thinking. Also in this case, there is a user friendly data base for searching the
good practice, by using the following predetermined fields:
 Project name identifies the project, which has been set up for implementing the
 Business Sectors and application fields to identify the field where the standards
                have been implemented
             Purpose of the project
             Objectives of the project
             Results achieved / foreseen
             ISO-IEC standard used/promoted
 Date initiation/end to know if the project is still active
 Countries and partners involved in order to eventually contact the national partner
 Contact points for receiving further information
 Project economics to figure out the resources involvement
 Web site for more detailed information
 Software used if it have been developed for the project, or the partners have just
used what was already on the market
 Notes for adding any useful information

   9. Searchable data base for courses
The data base for courses allows a simple search to verify the possibility of a self training on the
objectives of the DEPUIS project, which is the integration of PDT and LCT, in the aim of
respecting the European directives. The courses are described through a MDS with the following
             Title of the course
             Description of the course
 Sections of which the course is composed
             Beneficiaries of the course
 Length of time for attending the courses (only estimation)
             Lecturer
The courses are at the base of the qualification/ certification system. They provide with the
minimum requirements to know the subject, and usefully follow the training foreseen for the
certification of the competences.
   10. FAQ
The questions addressed to the partners will be collected in the Frequently Asked Questions, in
order to solve any doubt the users of the multimedia handbook could have.

   11. Other useful stuff
This section will include any link and/or the description of any further information or tool which
cannot be allocated in the previous sections.
