					ADVANCED COURSE IN ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND SOCIETY

DESCRIPTION: The analysis of the most complex structures of grammar and syntax will be
conducted by reading a selection of articles from the most important Italian newspapers.
This course aims at improving lexicon and developing in-depth conversation about current
events.


ACTIVITIES: The activities that will be performed during the course include:
reading/analyzing newspapers articles, grammar exercises, conversation, oral presentations,
writing, rewriting and summarizing. Exercises and compositions about or summaries of
articles will be regularly assigned as homework. For every writing assignment students will
be required to correct and rewrite their compositions.

INSTRUCTOR: Christine Dodd is a Professor of Italian at Italian Universities (CILTA,
University of Bologna, University of Siena – Arezzo) and foreign universities with campuses in
Italy (Johns Hopkins University, Brown University in Bologna). She is Adjunct Assistant
Professor of Italian at the Foreign Languages and Literature Department of the University of
Bologna. She also worked with foreign students helping them to get acquainted with Italian
educational system.

       Use of the Subjunctive in subordinate clauses
       Agreement of the Subjunctive
       Pronouns (direct, indirect, combined, relative)
       Pronouns “ci” and “ne”
       Indefinite moods
       Past tense (passato remoto)
       Direct/indirect speech
       Logical and Sentence analysis
       Lexicon enrichment
       Semantics


FINAL GRADE:
   • attendance and class participation, timely and regular submission of assigned
     homework 40%
   • grammar test in class : 30% (15% mid-term and 15% final)
   • oral presentation of a newspaper article: 30%

ATTENDANCE:
Course attendance is mandatory. Absences and tardiness will cause a reduction of ½ point
from your final grade for each absence and ⅓ for each time you arrive late to class.
If you cannot attend class, you will be expected to get information from your schoolmates
about home assignments and to be prepared for next class.

                                  Class discussion. Grammar: uses of the future tense
                                  (epistemic future) – future in the past.
3   Tuesday, October 20           Vocabulary and grammar reinforcement and expansion.
                                  Analysis of content and lexicon of a newspaper article.
                                  Class discussion. Grammar: relative pronouns. Use of
                                  relative pronoun to express “possession”.
4   Thursday, October 22          Vocabulary and grammar reinforcement and expansion.
                                  Class discussion. Analysis of content and lexicon of a few
                                  short newspaper articles. Stylistic features of newspaper
                                  titles. Grammar: prepositions. Revision of the subjects
                                  studied in class.
                                  First written composition due.
5   Tuesday, October 27           Vocabulary and grammar reinforcement and expansion.
                                  Analysis of content and lexicon of a text about the
                                  journalistic profession. Class discussion. Working in
                                  pairs: oral presentation based on a newspaper article.
                                  Stylistic features and structure of journalistic texts.
                                  Grammar: the passive form. Use of the conditional mood
                                  to express detachment taken from a newspaper article.
6   Thursday, October 29          Vocabulary and grammar reinforcement and expansion.
                                  Stylistic and structural aspects of newspaper texts.
                                  Writing an article following professor’s instructions and
                                  guidelines. Linguistic analysis of a song. Class discussion.
                                  Grammar: nominalisation.
                                  Summary of two newspaper articles due.
7   Tuesday, November 3           Vocabulary and grammar reinforcement and expansion.
                                  Analysis of content and lexicon of a newspaper article.
                                  Class discussion. Revision of grammar and lexicon.
                                  Conjunctions (connectives).
8   Thursday, November 5          MID-TERM EXAM (WRITTEN)

9   Tuesday, November 10          Vocabulary and grammar reinforcement and expansion.
                                  Analysis of content and lexicon of a newspaper article.
                                  Class discussion. Grammar: forms and uses of
                                  dependent/independent subjunctive. Sequence of tenses
                                  in the subjunctive.

                                  Class discussion. Grammar: direct/indirect speech.
12 Thursday, November 19          Vocabulary and grammar reinforcement and expansion.
                                  Analysis of content and lexicon of a newspaper article.
                                  Class discussion. Grammar: simple past.
13 Tuesday, November 24           ORAL PRESENTATION OF A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
                                  (first group)
14 Thursday, November 26          ORAL PRESENTATION OF A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
                                  (second group). Revision of the subjects studied in
                                  class.
15 Tuesday, December 1            FINAL EXAM (WRITTEN)

n.b. newspaper articles will be selected during the course, based on the most current and
poignant events.
