ANGELO CANELLI - BIOGRAPHY ... Canelli is a pianist with tecnique, irony and taste of risk...you like him because he is fanciful, rich, vital..." Marco Crisostomi (italian jazz critic) Angelo Canelli is one of the jazz new talents in Italy, as accepted by the “Top Jazz” critics of the last 3 years. He followed the Berklee School Italian clinics during “Umbria Jazz” in 1986, and the University of New Orleans jazz Clinics c/o Lanciano (Italy) from1995 to 1997 He worked with a lot of international musicians, including Bruce Forman, Bob Mintzer, Mike Stern, Kitty Margolis, Danny Gottlieb, Bob Bonisolo, Derek Douget, Jason Marsalis, Giovanni Tommaso, Diana Torto, Giulio Capiozzo, Fabrizio Bosso, Bill Russo, Maurizio Rolli, Cameron Brown, Hiram Bullock, Massimo Manzi, ecc. In 1997 he he recorded his first CD “Waltz for Myself” with his trio (with Ivano Sabatini on bass and Luigi la Verghetta on drums). In 1998 he won the “Baronissi” national competition for jazz musicians, and was awarded 2nd place in “Massimo Urbani” competition in the same year. In 1999 he played in the Afro-American music festival (Pescara) with the orchestra directed by the composer from Chicago Bill Russo. In the same year he recorded his second CD “DO UT DEM” with Giovanni Tommaso on bass and Paolo Corsi In 2001 he performed live for italian national radio “RAI 3”. In the same year he was invited for a tour in Berlin, where he played in the most important clubs of the city, and where he held a masterclass of jazz improvvisation for the students of the “Berlin Jazzschule” He played in the most important jazz festival of Italy as Pescara Jazz (‟97 and „98), Terni Jazz (2002),and in the most important jazz clubs of the world: Schlot (Berlin), Gate 401 (Toronto), Pearl (San Francisco), Snug Harbor (New Orleans). In 2002 he also played in the “Maurizio Rolli and AMP big band” „s CD “Tribute to Jaco Pastorius” (special guest Mike Stern). The CD was considered by “Bass Player” magazine CD of the month . He plays with Maurizio Rolli’s “Archivi Sonori”, with the Gianluca Esposito Quartet, with the singer Jenny B, with the bluesman Mick Radford & “Almost Religion”; he is pianist and arranger of the pop star Kelly Joyce. He also spends from 2000 part of the year playing in New Orleans with his new quartet with Jason Stewart -bass, Jason Marsalis-drums, Derek Douget-sax. He played at the Snug Harbor (in 2000, 2002, 2004 , 2005 and 2006), at the House of Blues (Piano Night 2006) and for the UNO (Jazz at the Sandbar 2005). In the last CD: “Angelo Canelli plays the music of Sting”, recorded in 2005, Angelo Canelli involved the New Orleans musicians (the just mentioned Jason Stewart and Jason Marsalis), and some of the best italian musicians as Massimo Manzi, Maurizio Rolli, Diana Torto, Gianluca Esposito, Samuele Garofoli. Also, took part to the recording session (on congas) a very special guest: Israel Varela from Mexico. Actually Canelli is the “Piano practice” teacher at the Bologna Conservatory of Music(degree in Jazz music) and the “Ear Training” teacher at the Pescara Musical Accademy.
