          Comenius 1 – School Projects
                  PROJECT
 MUSIC AND FOLKLORE – OUR MUTUAL LANGUAGE OF
     COMMUNICATION IN THE EUROPEAN UNION
    This Project is being elaborated by Philip Kutev Secondary Music School – Kotel,
Bulgaria and other schools of the kind in Europe.
     We provide for realization of the following activities in a three year‟s period:
     -       Visit exchange of student groups between the co-operating countries in order to
             get them acquainted with the cultural-historic heritage of the corresponding
             regions;
     -       Publishing of a multi-lingual album, illustrated with outstanding persons of
             European importance and cultural-historical sights from the regions.
     -       Production of a multi-media CD, with folklore traditions from the co-operating
             countries;
     -       Realization of joint concert programmes with the co-operating schools.

     The project is going to influence the students, positively motivating them to broaden
     their knowledge of the co-operating country, to learn a foreign language more fluently
     and make them feel more self-confident in communication. Realization of the activities
     in the project will bring to the establishment of friendly relationships, exchange of ideas
     and knowledge in broad aspects; it will widen the participants‟ view of life and will
     lower the foreign language barrier, expanding their cultural horizons.


                Contents and Organization of the Project
     1. What are the specific aims of the project and the expected influence on the
        participants and on other parts, which might be interested in the project?
        Realization of the present project aims at achieving the following:
     -      To introduce the natural beauties and the cultural heritage of the co-operating
            countries to the participants from Bulgaria and Europe;
     -      To get them have initial knowledge of English as a foreign language for
            communication on the project and help them broaden their language capacities
            through using it in its natural background, to widen their cultural and language
            horizon;
     -      To broaden their knowledge of the cultural-historic heritage and in the field of
            social sciences;
     -      To heighten the level of personal responsibility and commitment when solving
            the problem of finding the right place of young people in social life through
            getting groups of participants to know the local and state politics in this field
            and introducing them to Youth Organizations;
     -      То form certain abilities for team work which can be used when elaborating
            next projects;
     -      To establish permanent contact between the participants, which in realization of
            the provided activities, is going to enhance their motivation, abilities and self-
            confidence in foreign language communication;

-        To give the teachers opportunity to exchange pedagogic experience; this will
         bring to heighten the quality of school education and will stimulate the usage of
         innovations in their work.
       The Project is going to influence the participating parties, positively motivating
them to broaden their knowledge of the co-operating countries through enriching their
foreign language abilities and let them feel more free in communication. Realization of
the different activities in the project is going to build up friendly relationships, exchange
of ideas and knowledge in broad aspects; it is also going to expand the ecological
culture of the participants; it will widen the participants‟ view of life and lower the
foreign language barrier, expanding their cultural horizons as well.
      Our school is going to establish partnership with different local and governmental
organizations when realizing this Project. One of the school‟s important aims, together
with the local communities, is to build up new relations for partnership in the sphere of
cultural-historical heritage and for popularization of learning foreign languages, which
could in turn become the basis of development of other projects to European
Community Programmes.

2. What activities are you planning to carry out?

      The Project provides for realization of the following activities:

-       Reciprocal pupil exchanges between the co-operating countries in order to get
        them acquainted with the cultural-historic heritage of the two countries and the
        corresponding regions;
-       Production of a multi-media CD, with folklore performances of the co-operating
        schools;
-       Preparation of an Internet Web Site for information exchange and joint
        initiatives, which will be introduced to the co-operating schools through: a
        practical-theoretical discussion “Music – Our Common Language in
        Communication”; reciprocal seminars on European subjects such as “My Place
        in the European Community”; “There is No Place for Violence in Our Mutual
        European Home”; “Say: Yes to Ethnical Tolerance”. These seminars are going
        to take place during the exchange visits in the corresponding schools;
-       Preparation of an exhibition “The World Has No Borders”;
-       Publication of a multi-lingual album with a working title “My Motherland in
        United Europe”, showing cultural and historical sights from the regions and
        persons of European importance from the co-operating countries.
-       During the visit exchange, we foresee daily work for summing up the results of
        the day and participation in joint visits to cultural-historical monuments.


3. What is/are the final product/s you plan to achieve/ produce?

       The final products are going to be:
-      A multi-media compact disk with performances of students from the co-
       operating schools;
-      Concert programmes with participation of students from the co-operating
       schools, reflecting European musical culture;
-      Internet Web Site

    4. How do you plan to estimate the progress of the Project and its influence on the
        working students and teachers, on participating institutions and, where possible,
        on local communities?
        We expect that realization of this project will motivate and stimulate the students
to learn foreign languages; it will heighten their self-confidence and their desire to study
the cultural and natural heritage of the countries; it will probably popularize studying of
Bulgarian, English and other European languages in order to lower the language barrier
in communication. We expect that the rest of the students, who do not take part in this
Project, will take the initiative and realize other similar exchanges.
        The teachers will get acquainted with different educational systems and teaching
methods. There will be new friendships, which will widen the sphere of partnership
between the schools; between the schools and other social and local organizations,
between the regions and the countries.

   5.     How do you plan to propagate your experience and the final products?
          Our experience and the final products will be disseminated through
publications in the local media; “round table” discussions of questions concerning
young people and their socialization through traditions and historical experience of the
generations. We provide for meetings with the mayors, connected with the initiatives of
the Project. The impressions and the photos will be published in the Internet Web Site,
which will be presented to other organizations and to students from other schools. After
the Projects is finished, it will be presented to teachers from other school, who are
interested in the matter and have plans to elaborate projects, on a special work-shop. In
the process of work on the Project, we are going to collaborate with the local and
national media, which will reflect the initiatives directly.
       6. What specific measures(if any) do you plan to take for qualitative realization of
the Project?
       For qualitative realization of the objectives of the Project and to give equal
chances to all students who want to participate, their language skills in English will be
tested on part of the Bulgarian institution.
       To avoid the possibility of unequal attitude towards male and female students, we
plan to include a male teacher in the accompanying staff.

      7. Please, describe the role of each institution participating in the Project.
    The „International Relations Department‟ in Municipality of Sliven is going to co-
operate with realization of the contact between the countries.
    Philip Kutev Secondary Music School has the needed base for carrying out the
activities: a concert hall; lobbies and halls for the seminars and meetings; a boarding
house and a hotel-complex to accommodate the guests.
    The local radio and TV stations are going to popularize the project.
    The historical museums in Kotel are placing at our disposal their archives on the
theme.

   8. Does accomplishment of the Project need any electronic devices?

    Yes, it needs Internet connections or a fax as means of fast and easy
communications – for synchronizing the activities in realizing the Project and other
particularizations connected with it.
    As a last resort we could also use telephone connections.

    9. How will the Project ensure active participation of the students during its
realization?
    The activities will be planned in advance and there will be exchange of ideas
between the students of both countries for realization of a joint programme, thinking
things over and preparing and realization of the final products.
    Daily meetings of work groups during the reciprocal pupils exchanges for summing
up the results, throwing light on the economical and political terms in use. This will
provide for abilities to communicate, enriching the knowledge of languages in concrete
live situations.

     10. How will the Project integrate with the educational plan for the students?
     Work on the Project will be carried in the specialized lessons in Geography, History
and in the musical subjects; the language of the students will be enriched thanks to
specialized terms, connected with the activities and included in the CD, which will find
its application in the English language lessons.

   11. What is the training in the target language?
   English is going to be the work language on this Project, and the co-operating schools
have it included in their curriculum.

   12.How will the joint work of the students be organized during their visits to the co-
operating schools?

    The joint work between the students will be provided through work groups for
carrying out and summing up the results of the practical tasks; for preparation of
materials, parts of which will be used to arrange an exhibition and to form the final
products; through organizing visits to museums, cultural and historical sights, etc.
