							INTRODUCTION:
PETER OVERTON: Anastacia's no ordinary pop diva. She's an inspiration, a role model for young
women everywhere. Like Kylie Minogue, like 25 Australian women every day, she was devastated
when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. That was back in 2003 and even then, in her darkest
days, Anastacia knew she could do something special. So she began a video diary, a day-by-day
account of what she was going through — all the fears, the pain and ultimately the triumph.
Tonight, we'll show some of that diary, surprisingly intimate scenes of a vulnerable young woman
determined to survive. And survive she certainly did.

STORY:
ANASTACIA, VIDEO DIARY: I haven't cried yet today. That's a good thing.

PETER OVERTON: This is a very private insight into a very public person, a singing superstar
facing an uncertain future, or worse.

ANASTACIA: I thought everyone that had cancer died. That's all that I knew. You know.

PETER OVERTON: It's such a stark word, isn't it?

ANASTACIA: You know what, it's a terrifying word. And I completely understand that any person
that hears it, you know, concerning themselves, it's a really terrifying word when you hear it
because you really feel like cancer says the same thing as death.




ANASTACIA, VIDEO DIARY: I'm starting to learn about what it is I have because it's so new...

PETER OVERTON: It was January 2003 and Anastacia was in New York. She was 34 years old
and about to have breast reduction surgery. Then, a routine check-up revealed small lumps in her
left breast. She had cancer.

ANASTACIA: I'm not gonna die. And if I do, I'll die trying.

PETER OVERTON: Anastacia's safety zone was shattered nearly two years ago. But tonight you'll
meet a young woman who has not only survived breast cancer, but become an inspiration to so
many women.

ANASTACIA: Oh, Pay-ter.

PETER OVERTON: Hello, Anastacia.

ANASTACIA: Oh, c'mon in, Pay-ter. I can't call you 'Peter' because that sounds a little, like, wrong.

PETER OVERTON: In the world of superstars, Anastacia's rise has been phenomenal. Do you like
that?

ANASTACIA: A little sharp there...

PETER OVERTON: I like your dress.
ANASTACIA: Well, I tried. Ooh, we have a little like, you know, some sensation of some couplism
going on here.

PETER OVERTON: Did you grow up dreaming to be a singing star, a superstar?

ANASTACIA: No, not at all.

PETER OVERTON: Really?

ANASTACIA: No. I still find it quite surprising that it's still happening. I still find it quite
surprising that I'm doing it. It's not something that was at all a dream.

PETER OVERTON: But there was always a chance that she would end up on stage. Born in New
York, her real name was Stacey Newkirk. While she may have been destined to be a star, it was
only seven years ago that she worked as a receptionist in Los Angeles.
Did you get the sack from that job?

ANASTACIA: I got sacked from a facial salon because I think my voice was too penetrating, the
massage tables. I was, "Like, okay!" And all of a sudden, somebody was like, "Oh, my God!"

PETER OVERTON: Next for their nails?

ANASTACIA: Well, exactly. I'd be like, "You look friggin' great". You know, I just wasn't quite
the massage girl at the front desk thing. You know, you have to be very quiet. (Whispers) "Thank
you very much for coming to the salon. That's great, great." I wasn't really that kind of chick. I
didn't really know she was firing me either. I thought she said, "We're going to have to let you go."
And I said, "Where?" I was thinking, do they want me to pick up something from the store? What
do you want?

PETER OVERTON: Well, she probably whispered it to you.

ANASTACIA: She was very, very Beverly Hills, the jaw-clenching kind of chick.

PETER OVERTON: She went on the dole.

ANASTACIA: I collected unemployment, absolutely: $633.11 every two weeks.

PETER OVERTON: You still remember it?

NASTACIA: I so remember it because I was like, "I love you". I was very happy to have it.

PETER OVERTON: But she wasn't idle for long. At the almost old age of 26, Anastacia entered a
talent quest with a song she had written called 'Not That Kind'. She came second, but was good
enough to land a recording contract. 'Not That Kind' went on to be a big hit.

ANASTACIA: My mother and my father both had wonderful voices, very different than mine now.
But powerful, and since I was very, very young my mom said, you know, I was sitting there
repeating stuff that was on the radio just like it was on the radio, just like a million decibels higher
because I was young. So it was like everyone on the radio singing on helium, is what I sounded
like.
PETER OVERTON: Really?

ANASTACIA: I was like... (Sings in high voice) But imitating them.

PETER OVERTON: And how is it today?

ANASTACIA: Much lower. Yes, my muscle is mature now.

PETER OVERTON: For a small girl, she has a big voice. She's sexy, self-assured, a sultry singer
whose looks and sound troubled music industry bosses when she first began.
Is it true that these record execs actually asked you to sing a little whiter?

ANASTACIA: Oh, yeah, yeah. They really didn't quite understand. I have been told quite a few
times, "You know, you've got to try to be who you are." And I was like, "Okay, what do you
mean?" You know, I thought that I'm not for the business. If I don't really have the look and the
sound together, what am I going to do? I'm not going to change my look. This is who I am. And
they're like, "What music do you want to sing and how do you want to look?" And, "Don't you
think you should be in a girl band?" And I'm like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa."

PETER OVERTON: But you have this extraordinary voice. It's soul-like, it's Tina-Turner-like, if
you don't mind me saying.

ANASTACIA: Thank you.

PETER OVERTON: But you've got long blonde hair.

ANASTACIA: I do.

PETER OVERTON: Anastacia refused to compromise and very quickly established herself as a
new breed of pop star — a raunchy performer, a woman who wanted to sing rock. From the very
beginning she was a success, especially in Europe. She was always performing, always on the road.

ANASTACIA, VIDEO DIARY: Seven suitcases. One suitcase for the pants and skirts, one for the
shirts. Wouldn't you want to be organised like this if you were me?

PETER OVERTON: Then a shock.

ANASTACIA, VIDEO DIARY, JANUARY 2003: When I got on the phone with the doctor, he
said, "You're going to have a long life." And I was like, "Ha ha. But..." And he said, "But it's
malignant and we found cancer". And I was like, "Whoa". And I just started just bawling.

ANASTACIA: The mammogram showed precancerous cells. And I was like, "Hold on. I didn't put
that in my itinerary. I didn't put cancer. I don't have enough time for that. I got an album to do."

PETER OVERTON: It was an aggressive and fast-moving cancer and her doctors wanted to operate
immediately.

ANASTACIA, VIDEO DIARY: Eight o'clock in the morning is the first procedure, the needle
biopsy, and then 10 o'clock is the actual surgery.
PETER OVERTON: She was devastated, unable to believe that she had breast cancer at such a
young age. Then a brave decision. She decided to document her treatment in the hope that her own
story could help save the lives of others.

ANASTACIA: I was kind of scared. I had a moment where I just had to go, "Wow. I'm totally
having breast cancer surgery and reconstruction and this is crazy. This is like, this is crazy." And
just ... the emotions came up. I don't know how to describe them. They just ... I don't hold back
tears, but that was a moment where I definitely remember feeling like, "I'm scared".

ANASTACIA, VIDEO DIARY: I don't want to look at my breasts, so I have no idea what I look
like. So until I can see myself, maybe it will hit me. I just don't think I have the courage to look yet.

PETER OVERTON: Anastacia was lucky. Very lucky. Four days after her operation, doctors told
her that the cancer had not spread.

ANASTACIA, VIDEO DIARY: He feels he took out all the cancer out of my breast, but instead of
taking one lymph node, he had to take two.

PETER OVERTON: What is your prognosis?

ANASTACIA: I'm A-Okay as far as the breast cancer. Next week, I go in for the body scan. But it
hasn't been 100 percent since breast cancer. I had a scare last Christmas, which was very difficult
because you think it is coming back and you don't know what to do and you're like, a little wiped.
But it was a scare. So, you know, I may have to have scares for a while, for the rest of my life, you
know. I think that that's just part of the journey I need to take.

PETER OVERTON: Kylie Minogue...

ANASTACIA: Yes?

PETER OVERTON: …a very famous Australian performer.

ANASTACIA: A very wonderful, wonderful lady.

PETER OVERTON: The reaction in Australia was enormous and the reaction from women to go
and get mammograms after Kylie...

ANASTACIA: Well, because here we are, you know, we are the kind of society that the younger
woman are contracting cancer and not because they smoke and not because it was in their family.
And so just getting regular tests. The earlier you find it, it's totally livable and you are bouncing
right back to being, you know, yourself. People were more shocked that I came back so quickly and
kind of look like me and they are, like, "Wow!" But that is part of the blessing that can happen if
you have early detection.

PETER OVERTON: Within six months, Anastacia was back to her best, making music and belting
them out. She was showing everyone that she's okay. Next on her agenda, a greatest hits CD and a
new single, 'Pieces of a Dream'.
You are a beautiful woman, a sexy woman. Do you think, as many women fear, that having breast
cancer would take that away from you?
ANASTACIA: As many scars as I could have on my body, I would never feel that I am less
womanly. But I was nervous to... I am very shy when it comes to being with men. I'm always very
conservative. As wild as I can be, the minute that, like, all of a sudden I have to kiss somebody, I'm
like, "Oh, my God. Oh, my God!" I get very, very girlie and very...

PETER OVERTON: Well, I won't attempt to kiss you goodbye then.

ANASTACIA: Thank you!

PETER OVERTON: (Laughs)

ANASTACIA: I appreciate it. And you're married so I wouldn't want to get that backlash.

PETER OVERTON: Do you think you will be doing this when you're 50?

ANASTACIA: I don't know.

PETER OVERTON: Do you want to?

ANASTACIA: I don't know. I'm enjoying doing it now. And that's a long way away to know
whether or not I would still like to be up there in a low-rise pair of pants, a pair of stilettos, shaking
my shong-shong everywhere.

PETER OVERTON: This is the song that launched you.

ANASTACIA: Yeah. I like this song. This is a happy song.

ANASTACIA: Pensavo che tutti quelli che hanno il cancro muoiono. Questo è tutto quello che
sapevo.

P.O: E' una parola così dura vero?

A: Si, è terrificante. E' terrificante quando la senti perché davvero pensi che sia la stessa cosa che
dire morte.

V-D: Sto imparando a conoscere di più riguardo cosa mi sta succedendo.

P.O: Era Gennaio 2003 e Anastacia era a New York. Aveva allora 34 anni e voleva sottoporsi ad
un'operazione di riduzione del seno. Poi, un check-up rivelò piccoli noduli nel seno sinistro. Aveva
il cancro.

A: Non morirò. E se morirò, morirò combattendo.

P.O: La salute di Anastacia venne sconvolta due anni fa. Ma stasera incontrerete una giovane donna
che non solo ha sconfitto il cancro, ma che è anche diventata un'ispirazione per tante donne.

A: Oh, Pay-ter.

P.O: Ciao Anastacia.

A: Oh, vieni, Py-ter. Non ti posso chiamare "Peter" perché suona, come dire, sbagliato.

P.O: Nel mondo delle superstars, l'ascesa di Anastacia è stata fenomenale. Ti piace?

A: Un po' improvviso…

P.O: Mi piace il tuo vestito.

A: Beh, ho provato. Ooh, abbiamo come, sai, una sensazione di qualche aggancio qui.

P.O: Sei cresciuta sognando di fare la cantante, di essere una superstar?

A: No, per niente.

P.O: Davvero?

A: No, lo trovo ancora abbastanza sorprendente che stia succedendo.
Non era un sogno.
P.O: Ma c'è sempre stata una possibilità che alla fine sarebbe salita su un palco. Nata a New York,
il suo vero nome era Stacey Newkirk (??, Stacey è il suo soprannome!!). Nonostante fosse destinata
ad essere una star, solo 7 anni fa lavorava come receptionist a Los Angeles.
Sei stata licenziata?

A: Sono stata licenziata da un salone di bellezza perché penso che la mia voce fosse troppo
penetrante. Ero come "Come, okay!". E tutti trasalivano, qualcuno diceva "Oh mio Dio!".

P.O: Vicino alle loro unghie?

A: Si, esatto. Ero come "Stai pazzescamente bene!". Sai, non ero il tipo di ragazza che fa i
massaggi. Sai, devi essere molto tranquilla. (sussurra) "Grazie per essere venuta in questo salone,
davvero un piacere, un piacere". Non ero quel tipo di ragazza. Ma non sapevo che mi volevano
licenziare. Dicevano "preferiamo lasciarti andare". E io dicevo "Dove?" Pensavo, vogliono che vada
a prendere qualcosa dal negozio? Cosa volete?

P.O: Beh, probabilmente te l'ha sussurrato.

A: Era molto molto Beverly Hills, il tipo di ragazze che parlano con la bocca chiusa.

P.O: Ti diede il sussidio di disoccupazione?

A: Ho riscosso il sussidio assolutamente: 633.11 $ ogni due settimane.

P.O: Te lo ricordi ancora?

A: Me lo ricordo si, perché ero come "Ti voglio bene". Ero contenta di averlo.

P.O: Ma non fu disoccupata per molto. All'età di 26 anni, Anastacia partecipò ad un talent-show con
una canzone che aveva scritto intitolata "Not That Kind". Arrivò seconda, ma fu abbastanza per
condurla ad un contratto con una casa discografica. Not That Kind divenne una grande hit.

A: Mia mamma e mio papà avevano voci meravigliose, molto diverse dalla mia ora. Ma potenti, e
sin da quando ero molto molto piccola mia mamma diceva che stavo seduta ripetendo le cose che
sentivo alla radio come se fosse alla radio, solo un milione di decibel più forte perché ero piccola.
Quindi era come se tutti alla radio cantassero (letteralmente, come l'elio, vuol dire che la voce
sembrava come se avesse respirato elio), era così che cantavo.

P.O: Davvero?

A: Ero come (canta ad alta voce). Ma li imitavo.

P.O: E com'è oggi?

A: Molto più bassa. Si, la mia forza è maturata ora.

P.O: Per una ragazza minuta, aveva una grande voce. E' sexy, sicura di sé, una cantante passionale
la cui immagine e voce stravolse l'industria musicale quando cominciò.
E' vero che ti chiedevano di cantare in modo più "bianco"?
A: Oh, si, si. Davvero non capivano. Tante volte mi dicevano: " Sai, devi cercare di essere te
stessa." E io, "Ok, cosa vuoi dire?" Sai, pensavo che non fossi adatta per questo tipo di lavoro. Se
non posso mantenere la mia immagine e la mia voce insieme, cosa dovrei fare? Non voglio
cambiare la mia immagine. Sono come sono. E loro "Che tipo di musica vuoi fare e che look vuoi
avere?" E "Non pensi che dovresti entrare in una band al femminile?" E io " whoa, whoa , whoa".

P.O: Ma hai una voce straordinaria. E' soul, è come quella di Tina Turner, se non ti dispiace che te
lo dica.

A. Grazie.

P.O: Ma hai lunghi capelli biondi.

A: E' così.

P.O: Anastacia rifiutò compromessi e molto presto stabilì il suo stile come un nuovo genere di pop
star- una performer vivace, una donna che voleva cantare il rock. Dall'inizio ebbe successo,
specialmente in Europa. Era sempre in movimento, sempre in viaggio.

V-D: Sette valigie. Una per i pantaloni e le gonne, una per le camicie. Non vorresti essere
organizzato così se fossi in me?

P.O: poi uno shock.

V-D: Quando fui al telefono con il dottore, mi disse: "Avrai una lunga vita" E io " Ha ha. Ma…" E
disse "Ma è maligno e abbiamo trovato un cancro". E io " Whoa". E ho cominciato a urlare.

A: La mammografia mostrò cellule precancerose. E io "Aspetta. Non l'avevo previsto nel mio
itinerario. Non avevo previsto il cancro. Non ho abbastanza tempo per quello. Devo fare un album".

P.O: Era un cancro aggressivo e cresceva velocemente e il suo dottore volle operarla subito.

V-D: Alle otto del mattino ho la prima procedura, la biopsia, e poi alle 10 l'effettivo intervento.

P.O: Era scioccata, incapace di credere che aveva un cancro al seno ad un'età così giovane. Poi una
decisione coraggiosa. Decise di documentare tutto il trattamento nella speranza che la sua storia
potesse aiutare a salvare la vita di altri.

A: Ero spaventata. Ebbi un momento in cui realizzai "Wow. Sto avendo un'operazione per il cancro
al seno e ricostruzione e tutto ciò è pazzesco. E' pazzesco" E poi le emozioni saltarono fuori. Non so
come descriverle. Erano solo… Non trattengo le lacrime, ma quello era un momento nel quale
ricordo che mi sentivo come " Ho paura".

V-D: Non voglio guardare il mio seno, quindi non ho idea di come sia. Quindi quando riuscirò a
guardarmi, probabilmente mi colpirà. Ma penso che per adesso non ho il coraggio di guardarmi.

P.O: Anastacia fu fortunata. Molto fortunata. Quattro giorni dopo l'intervento, i dottori le dissero
che il cancro non si era diffuso.

V-D: Ha tolto tutto il cancro dal mio seno, ma invece di togliere un linfonodo, ne ha dovuti togliere
due.
P.O: Qual è la tua prognosi?

A: Sono ok per quanto riguarda il cancro al seno. La prossima settimana vado a fare le analisi. Ma
non è stato sempre al cento per cento per quanto riguarda il cancro al seno. Ho avuto paura lo scorso
Natale, è stato difficile perché pensi che stia tornando e non sai cosa fare e sei distrutta. Ma è stato
uno spavento. Quindi, sai, potrei avere paura per un po', per il resto della mia vita, sai. Penso che sia
parte del cammino che devo intraprendere.

P.O: Kylie Minogue…

A: Sì?

P.O: Una cantante australiana molto famosa.

A: Una donna davvero meravigliosa.

P.O: La reazione in Australia fu enorme e la reazione delle donne a sottoporsi ad una mammografia
dopo Kylie…

A: Beh, perché siamo qui, sai, siamo in una società in cui le giovani donne hanno un cancro e non
perché fumano o perché hanno altri casi in famiglia. Quindi fate controlli regolari. Prima lo trovate,
più si può sopportare e ti puoi riprendere ed essere te stessa. La gente era scioccata di rivedermi così
velocemente e di vedermi com'ero e come sono sempre, e dicevano "Wow!". Ma è questa è parte
della benedizione che può succedere se lo scopri presto.

P.O: In sei mesi, Anastacia tornò al meglio, facendo musica e zittendo tutti. Stava mostrando a tutti
che sta bene. Presto ci sarà un Greatest Hits e un nuovo singolo "Pieces Of A Dream".
Sei una bellissima donna, sei sexy. Pensi, come temono molte donne, che il cancro al seno possa
toglierti tutto questo?

A: Tutte le cicatrici che posso avere sul mio corpo non mi faranno mai sentire meno donna. Ma ero
nervosa di… Sono molto timida quando succede di stare con degli uomini. Sono sempre molto
prudente. Per quanto possa essere pazza, nel momento in cui, tutt'a un tratto devo baciare qualcuno,
sono come "Oh mio Dio, oh mio Dio!". Divento una bambina e molto…

P.O: Beh, non tenterò di baciarti per salutarti allora.

A: Grazie!

A: Lo apprezzo. E poi sei sposato quindi non vorrei che ci fosse la censura. (la parola backlash non
l'ho trovata sul dizionario, ho trovato lash che vuol dire anche censura, e mi sembrava la più adatta

P.O: Pensi che farai questo lavoro quando avrai 50 anni?

A: Non lo so.

P.O: Lo vorresti?
A: Non lo so. Mi godo il farlo adesso. E ho davanti una lunga strada per sapere se vorrei o no stare
lassù in pantaloni a vita bassa, un paio di tacchi a spillo, muovendo il mio (shong è una parola che
non esiste, ma avete capito per che cosa sta no? :-)) dappertutto.

P.O: Questa è la canzone che ti ha lanciata.

A: Lo è. Mi piace.

P.O: Ancora?

A: Si. Mi piace quella canzone. E' una canzone allegra.

P.O: Anastacia, è stato bellissimo incontrarti.

A: Grazie. E' stato bello parlare con te.
