As Senior English Language Specialist, I worked with the English Language
Department of the Shanghai Teachers University in order to provide in-service teacher
training programmes, for Chinese teachers of English, in the municipality of Shanghai.
Involving: carrying out needs analyses by visits to state education schools, Primary to
Secondary level, and liaising with the Shanghai Education Bureau and Shanghai
Teacher Training Colleges. On the basis of this needs analysis , with a project team of
teacher trainers made up from the lecturers in the English Department of the university,
a series of training programmes for Supervisors and Senior Teachers of English were
designed, to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out in-service
training for classroom teachers of English. These in-service programmes were then
monitored and the feedback informed the future development of the training
My role was as project leader , materials and seminar designer and senior trainer and
also to train selected members of the English Department from the university to take
over my role in the future.

My responsibilities divided into the above two main areas , that of Principal and Head
of Teacher Training.
As principal my duties included; organising and being involved in in-service teacher
training; meeting prospective clients and marketing the schools; supervising the
staffing; interviewing prospective teachers and clerical staff; supervising in-school
timetabling; organising courses; planning the general direction of the schools and
managing the day to day running of two busy language schools, with over 30 staff.
R.S.A./ UCLES CTEFLA senior course tutor, running a teacher training centre. The
teacher training team was 6 trainers strong and we ran around 7 courses an academic
year. RSA / UCLES CTEFLA tutor since 1986. RSA / UCLES CTEFLA assessor

From Sept. 1989 - Aug. 1994 I worked with D. Gibbon on the DTEFLA course run at
Regent School, participating in input sessions and internal assessments.
Teacher training for state school teachers of English, from Primary school level, to
Further Education level . Many of these courses were to prepare Italian teachers of
English to pass national examinations on teaching methodology; which then enables
them to seek employment as full-time teachers of English in the state system.
From 1990 teacher trainer for ANINSEI , the national union of teachers, which runs
yearly in-srevice training courses for teachers of English who are on national contracts.
