The Congress will be held at the University of Helsinki in downtown Helsinki.


The official language of the Congress is English. It will be used for all printed material and
presentations. No interpretation service will be provided.

Welcome Reception by the City of Helsinki
The City of Helsinki invites the participants and accompanying person to a reception on
Monday August 26 at 20.00.
Included in the registration fee.


Excursion to Hämeenlinna.

There are two choices of which to choose for the excursion day coach ride to Hämeenlinna.

Choice number 1:

A coach trip from Helsinki through the Finnish countryside to Järvenpää and Ainola, the home
of the great composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). This unique building was designed in the
national-romantic style by architect Lars Sonck in 1904. After leaving Ainola, the tour
continues via Halosenniemi, the former home and studio of Pekka Halonen (1865-1933), one
of Finland’s foremost landscape artists. The red-pinewood villa is situated on the longest cape
of lake Tuusula and dates back to 1902. The artist’s most important and inspiring works are
displayed here.

Choice number 2:

A coach trip from Helsinki via the glass design museum of Iittala.
The Iittala Glassworks was established in 1881 by P.M.Abrahamsson, a Swedish master
glassblower. The guided tour of the factory takes about an hour. You will also have a brief
possibility to do some shopping at the factory shop, which carries a complete sel ection of
Iittala glassware.

Estimated arrival of both tours at Häme Castle is 16.45.
Coffee and tour of the castle followed by dinner at 18.30.
Return to Helsinki and hotels at approximately 22.30.

Gala Dinner at Marina Congress Center at 20.00
The Conference Gala Dinner will be arranged at the Marina Congress Center
On Wednesday August 28 at 20.00-23.00. Bus transfer back and forth to the conference
hotels has been arranged.

Dinner ticket price EUR 60.

Accompanying persons’ City Sight-seeing tour
Monday August 26, 2002 at 10.00 – 12.00
The best and most enjoyable way of getting to know Helsinki and its vicinity within a short time
limit is to take this sightseeing tour by bus. The tour will give participants an overall impression
of the garden-like surroundings of Helsinki on the way from Espoo to Helsinki. The tour
includes all of the highlights of the city of Helsinki. The Market Square right in the heart of the
city; one of the most popular sights, the Temppeliaukio Rock Church which is carved out of
solid rock as well as the Sibelius monument, an obscure steel sculpture commemorating the
great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius just to mention a few. The tour will be guided in English.

Duration of the tour is two hours.
The price of the tour is EUR 35.

Accompanying persons’ tour to Fiskars Village and Mustio Manor
Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at 10.00 – 16.00
The Fiskars village along the river is a charming place which has attracted many designers
and artists. The old village is booming with little studios and shops. Fiskars is also the home of
the famous orange Fiskars scissors, the symbol for modern Finnish design. The tour
continues to wooden 18th century Mustio Manor. We shall visit the historical manor house and
enjoy lunch in the mansion restaurant. The tour will be guided in English.

The duration of the tour is approximately six hours.

Lapland Tour
Thursday 29.8.2002 – Saturday 31.8.2002
On this tour, you will be able to experience all essential elements of Lapponian summer -
natural environment, wild waters, a genuine reindeer ranch, the gastronomy of Lapland and
Santa Claus. Up in Lapland, silence is awesome; the air is clean and nature unspoilt. Enjoy an
unforgettable visit to the National Park of Ounas-Pallas; a traditional Lappish village and get
acquainted with reindeer herding at a reindeer farm. Stop for a refreshing break by the
riverside and rapids. The scenery from the top of the fell Levi is breathtaking.

St.Petersburg Tour
Friday 30.8.2002 – Sunday 1.9.2002
This will be an unforgettable tour by train to St. Petersburg, the old capital of the Russian
Empire. St. Petersburg is nothing less than a true metropolis of arts - an attractive pearl for art
lovers, ballet, music and theatre enthusiasts, as well as admirers of great architecture. This
grand city, known as Leningrad during the Soviet period, was originally masterminded and
built by Peter the Great in the 18th century as a rival to Venice. It stands proudly on a series of
islands connected by more than 300 bridges in the easternmost corner of the Gulf of Finland.
Innumerable treasures of European and Russian art, can been seen in the museums, galleries
and collections.

Please observe! A Russian VISA is NOT included in the tour price!
TSG-Congress will provide the participants with further visa instructions upon
reservation and payment of the tour.

on an individual basis during the Congress. Furthermore, if you wish to obtain information on

Tallinn, Estonia, please do not hesitate to contact TSG-Congress. If you are interested in
visiting Estonia, please check in your home country whether you will need a VISA for entry or


All tours are operated with a minimum of 20 participants. Prices are subject to government
imposed increases and taxes. In case of an insufficient number of participants or for reasons
beyond our control, TSG-Congress reserves the right to cancel a tour or vary itineraries.


All payments should be made in Euros (EUR). Please check that your name and IIPF2002 is
clearly legible on bank transfers in order to ensure that the payment will be correctly
registered. Payment should be submitted together with the registration form, using one of the
following means of payment:

Payment should be free of any bank handling charges to the receiver e.g. all bank charges for

A confirmation letter of your registration and reservations will be sent to you by


To guarantee your hotel/hostel reservation a hotel deposit of EUR 200 is required. The hostel
deposit is EUR 50. The deposit should be paid together with registration payments. The rest of
the accommodation payment should be paid directly to the hotel/hostel and the deposit paid
will be credited on your final hotel/hostel bill when checking out. Your hotel/hostel reservation
will be confirmed when TSG-Congress has received your deposit. All alterations or
cancellations to accommodation reservations should be informed to TSG-Congress in writing.


Accommodation during the Congress has been reserved at the following hotels and hostel. All
hotels are centrally located and within easy reach of the Congress Venue.
The hotels offer special room rates which are valid only for reservations made with the
attached registration form. The room rates include VAT and breakfast. Since only a fixed
number of rooms have been reserved, TSG-Congress will operate on a “first come – first
served” basis with incoming requests.

Cancellation of participation
A written notification of cancellation should be sent to TSG-Congress.
If cancellation is received by 26 July, 2002 the registration fee less a cancellation fee of EUR
170 will be refunded. No refund will be issued for cancellations received after 26 July, 2002.
There is no refund for no-shows.

Hotel and tour cancellation
A written notification of cancellation should be sent to TSG-Congress.
If cancellation is received by TSG-Congress by 26 July, 2002 payment will be refunded in full
less a handling charge of EUR 35. No refund of the hotel or tour payment will be issued for
cancellations after 26 July, 2002.


Airport transfer
Helsinki-Vantaa airport is located about 20 km from Helsinki..
The average driving time between the airport and Helsinki is 30 minutes.
Finnair airport buses serve a connection from the airport to the center of Helsinki.
Taxis are also easily available.

Currency and banks
The monetary unit used in Finland is the Euro.
Most Finnish services accept major credit cards. Facilities for cashing travellers’ cheques in
Finland are available at banks (opening hours 9.30-16.00) and at most hotels. Banks are
closed on Saturdays and Sundays except for banks at the Helsinki International Airport.
Foreign exchange agencies for example “Forex” in the city center are open on weekdays.

The electric current in Finland is 220V (50 Hz). Plugs and sockets are the same as in the
Continental countries of the European Union. British and American participants need plug
adapters for electrical appliances.

The congress organizers cannot accept liability for personal injuries sustained, for loss of, or
damage to property belonging to conference participants (or their accompanying persons),
either during or as a result of the congress. Please check the validity of your own insurance.

Letter of Invitation
The organizing committee will be pleased to send a letter of invitation to any individual
requesting one. It is to be understood that such an invitation is intended to help potential
participants raise travel funds or obtain a visa. It is not a commitment on the part of the
congress to provide any financial support. You may request such a letter of invitation from the
IIPF2002 scientific secretariat.

Time Difference
The time in Finland is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich mean time (GMT).

Travelling to Finland by air
Major international airlines fly directly to the Helsinki International Airport from most capitals
and major cities in Europe, USA and Japan. Please note that conference participants are not
insured by the Congress. Participants are advised to obtain an appropriate insurance on their
own account.

Finland is a member of the European Union and visas are not required for citizens of
EU-countries and many other countries. A valid passport is required. Participants requiring a
visa for entry to Finland are strongly advised to make their application in their home country at
least three months before intended date of travel. For more information, please contact your
nearest embassy or consulate of Finland or consult your travel agency.

The average day-time temperature in August is +18-20 °C.
A light jacket or cardigan is advisable for evening outdoor wear.

The Congress Organization and the Congress Agency (TSG-Congress) act as agents only in
securing hotels, transport and travel services and shall in no event be liable for acts or
omissions in the event of injury, damage, loss, accident, delay of irregularity of any kind
whatsoever during arrangements organised through contractors or the employees of such
contractors in carrying out services. Hotel and transportation services are subject to the terms
and conditions under which they are offered to the public in general. The Congress
Organization and the Congress Agency reserve the right to make changes where deemed
necessary, without prior notice to parties concerned. All disputes are subject to Finnish Law.
