Pergas Institute of Islamic Studies (Arabic Language Section) Simple Arabic – Introduction to the Language & Etiquette of Arabia Objectives At the end of the programme, participants will • Better understand and appreciate culture in the Arab world • Be equipped with basic everyday etiquette on how to interact with Arabs. • Be able to use practical expression for vital communication with Arabs. • Be comfortable in Arabic surroundings. Programme Structure This two-module induction programme is designed to benefit those who are interested to visit the Arab world or to do business in Arabia. The programme will be conducted once a week over 8 weeks. Each session will last 2 hours. At the end of the course participants will be required to sit for a written and oral assessment. A Professional Certificate will be awarded to participants who successfully complete both assessments. Other participants will receive Certificate of Participation. Course Synopsis Module 1: Etiquette in Arabia This module focuses on the ethics and etiquette in Arabia. Essential culture points will be highlighted thus giving participants useful insights on how to behave in the everyday situations. Topics covered include practical situations such as meeting an Arab, visiting him, and attending a social invitation. Important facts about the religion, people and language of the Arabs will also be touched in this module. At the end of this module, participants will have a more heightened sensitivity and awareness of the Arabs and the Arab world. Module 2: Arabic – A Practical Guide The language module will cover everyday expressions for a visitor from the time of arrival until he/she leaves the country. This course will guide participants to get about doing almost everything such as getting around in a taxi, checking into a hotel, shopping, visiting attractions and others. This model also includes an introduction to Arabic grammar so as to give the participants an edge towards effective communication. At the end of this module, participants will have a functional use of Arabic and confidence to start a conversation with an Arab. Assessment Assessments will be conducted throughout the programme in addition to an oral and written exam at the end of it. Therefore, participants are encouraged to attend all sessions prepared with all the relevant assignments. The mode of assessments will vary with the final exams carrying 80% of the whole assessment. PARTICIPANTS These courses are for adult learners of Arabic.
