Common Workshop Features
All of our workshops use active learning, where participants have the opportunity to apply the session material to
their own organizations, and share their insights, questions, and concerns with their peers. We also draw upon
several examples from the 50+ nonprofits with whom we have worked. All sessions are approximately a half-day
in length, and can be delivered on their own or in combination, depending upon your needs and priorities. Pricing
and scheduling is negotiated on a session-by-session basis. We would be happy to create customized session for
your organization.
1. An Introduction to the “Game” Of Social Enterprise
In this highly interactive, fun and practical workshop, participants team up to brainstorm and rate real
potential social enterprises. Using a game approach, participants are introduced to social enterprise
terminology, concepts and process. In addition to interactive group discussions, participants will use a
simple, one-page brainstorming and screening tools to guide their teamwork.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
" Discuss fundamental social enterprise terminology, concepts and development process;
" Identify a range of social enterprise opportunities for selected participant organizations; and
" Rate their brainstormed opportunities and discuss how to proceed with the top-rated ideas.
2. Social Enterprise Risks, Challenges, and Success Strategies
Is social enterprise risky business? In this highly practical session, participants will learn about the real and
perceived challenges in social enterprise development, as well as potential risks of failure and success. We
will present general success strategies and then apply them to participants’ organizations.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
" Outline the perceived and real challenges and risks in social enterprise development;
" Identify the potential challenges and risks for their own organizations; and
" Outline general success strategies for social enterprise as well as specific strategies for their own
organization.
3. Assessing Organizational Readiness: An Overview
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn about the three key elements of assessing an organization’s readiness to develop a social enterprise:
a) organizational alignment, b) earned income assets, and d) customer relationships;
" Complete a short self-assessment, to give them an initial sense of their relative strengths and weaknesses;
and
" Explore appropriate next steps, in light of their self-assessment results.
4. Aligning Your Social Enterprise
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn about the importance of aligning their social enterprise with their organization’s mission, strategic
plan, core competencies, and key stakeholders;
" Complete a short self-assessment, to give them a sense how aligned their current or proposed social
enterprise is; and
" Explore appropriate next steps, in light of their self-assessment results

5. Taking Stock of Your Earned Income Assets
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn about earned income assets – those organizational programs, resources, capabilities and
relationships that can form the basis for earned income opportunities;
" Complete a short self-assessment, to give them a sense of their most valuable earned income assets; and
" Explore appropriate next steps, in light of their self-assessment results.
6. “What Can We Do?” - Identifying Earned Income Opportunities
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn about the four basic kinds of earned income opportunities – 1) doing more with what you’ve
already got, 2) selling new products to your current customers, 3) selling your current products to new
customers, and 4) selling new products to new customers;
" Learn to use a simple framework for identifying each kind of opportunity; and
" Apply framework to identify earned income opportunities for selected participant organizations.
In small teams, participants will use a simple brainstorming framework to identify opportunities for selected
participant organizations.
7. “What Should We Do?” - Screening Earned Income Opportunities
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn about opportunity screening and why it’s important to earned income development;
" Learn how to use a simple feasibility screening tool; and
" Use that screening tool to assess the opportunities for selected participant organizations.
In small teams, participants will use a simple screening tool to assess the feasibility of selected participant
organizations’ opportunities. (While this workshop can be offered as a standalone session, it is the logical
follow-up to the “Identifying Opportunities” session.)
8. “What Can We Do Right Now?” Social Enterprise QuickStarts
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn what QuickStart activities are – actions that will produce positive results in the very short term –
and why they are important to social enterprise development;
" Explore a range of specific QuickStart activities; and
" Identify a number of appropriate QuickStart activities for their own organizations.
9. “Look Before You Leap” – Testing Your Opportunity’s Feasibility
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn a four-step approach to assessing the strategic, operational, marketing and financial feasibility of an
opportunity;
" Familiarize themselves with the Quick Feasibility Test worksheet; and
" Make an initial attempt at completing a Quick Feasibility Test for selected participants’ opportunities.
In small teams, participants will complete the Quick Feasibility Test worksheet for a selected participant’s
social enterprise opportunity.

10. Building Your Social Enterprise Committee
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn about the key roles and responsibilities of the enterprise leader, executive director, board members,
and other enterprise committee members;
" Identify who, specifically, should be on their social enterprise committee; and
" Learn guidelines and strategies to get the most from their committee.
11. Calculating Breakeven Sales
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn what breakeven sales is and why it’s important to earned income development;
" Learn about the different variables of a breakeven sales calculation, and how to calculate breakeven sales;
" Calculate breakeven sales for two sample scenarios; and
" Engage in a discussion about how they should go about calculating breakeven sales for their own earned
income ventures.
12. Planning Simple but Effective Market Research
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn about market research, including: what it is, why you should do it, and what it can and cannot do;
" Learn about planning simple but effective market research for a social enterprise; and
" Create a real market research plan for a selected participant’s social enterprise.
In small teams, participants will use a simple framework to create a market research plan for one team
member’s social enterprise.
13. “Why Should They Buy From You?” - Defining Your Unique Selling Proposition
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn about what a unique value proposition is and why it is essential to the successful development of
any enterprise;
" Learn how to develop a unique value proposition; and
" Develop a unique value proposition for sample scenario.
Participants will be provided a simple framework to help them develop a unique value proposition for a
sample scenario, and will share their questions and concerns with their peers.
14. Building Your Board’s Social Enterprise Capability
In this highly practical session, participants will:
" Learn the key requirements and challenges of the Board overseeing social enterprise development;
" Work through an assessment of their Board’s current social enterprise capabilities, knowledge and
expertise present Board; and
" Identify strategies to enhance Board performance in a social enterprise.
