									Cell Wall – Plant cell
      Function:
          o Protect and support
          o Controls what goes in
      and out of cell
      Structure:
          o Very rigid but flexible
          o Porous
          o Made of cellulose (non-living
     material)

Cell Membrane: both
      Function:
o Controls what goes in and out
     of the cell.
o Keeps all organelles inside cell
      Structure:
          o Has pores
          o Contains proteins
          o Very thin

Cytoplasm- both
         o Function: most cellular metabolism
            occurs here
     Structure:
             o Thick, clear fluid
o fluid that fills the cell up.

Centrioles: animal cell
        Function:
o Help the cell when it is time to divide.
        Structure:
            o small set of microtubules
o Cannot be seen when cell is not dividing.
            o Only two of them

Mitochondria – Plant and animal
                       Function:
                                    o Gives cells their energy

                       Structure:
o Known as the “powerhouse” of the cell
                                    o Rod-like structure

Endoplasmic Reticulum - both

Function: carries proteins from one area of cell to another

Smooth: Creation and storage of steroids
Rough: Packaging and distribution of proteins

                       Structure:
                                    o Looks like a passageway/maze
o Rough: has ribosomes on the outside
                                     o Can look different

    Ribosome: Plant and animal

        Function: Produces protein

        Structure:
            o Small grain-like structure
o Attached to rough E.R. or floats in cell cytoplasm

Golgi Bodies - both
Function: Receives proteins and other materials and distribute them to other parts of the cell.

      Characteristics:
         o Single cell membrane
o Look like flat tubes (pancakes)
         o The “cells mailroom”

    Vacuole: both
Function: Stores food, water, waste and other materials

      Structure:
                         Animal cell has several
o Plant cells: when full is plump and firm
o Most plants have only one large vacuole

    Chloroplasts: Plant only
Function: captures energy from the sun and produce energy for the cell

      Structure:
o Pigment chlorophyll makes the plant cell green
          o Double outer membrane
          o

  Lysosome: Plant and animal***
  ***More common in animal

Function: breaks down large food to smaller particles. Also breaks down old cell particles.

      Strucuture:
          o Contains harsh chemicals
o Membrane keeps chemicals from escaping
o Known as cell’s “clean up crew”
