ON SUSTAINABILITY AND THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
WHEREAS, ECOS created the ECOS-DoD Sustainability Work Group to initiate a standing
forum for the discussion of sustainability programs utilized by military facilities in the states and
WHEREAS, the ECOS-DoD Sustainability Work Group provides an opportunity for the
exchange of ideas, views and experiences among state and territorial environmental
commissioners, DoD installations, other federal agencies, and non-government organizations on
sustaining resources to mutually meet mission requirements; and
WHEREAS, the Forum for a Sustainable Future, comprised of representatives of approximately
20 state environmental agencies, five federal agencies, several DoD/military service installations,
industry, academia and non-government organizations, was held November 1-2, 2006, in San
Diego, California; and
WHEREAS, the Outcomes and Action Items from the Forum for a Sustainable Future documents
specific ideas and suggestions made by Forum participants that identify core principles and
practices of successful sustainability programs, propose solutions for overcoming obstacles to
such programs, and express a sense of urgent need for the development and implementation of
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
ECOS expresses its support and commitment to promoting partnership, leadership, innovation,
and systemic change to sustain the natural, environmental, economic, and cultural resources of
the United States, and its Territories for now and in the future.
ECOS supports partnerships with state, federal, local and tribal governmental entities, as well as
non-governmental organizations, academia and industry to promote and advance sustainability.
ECOS encourages sustainability training for members and the showcasing of sustainable
programs, projects, and initiatives.
ECOS encourages its members to recognize individuals and teams that champion sustainability
ECOS encourages the ECOS-DoD Sustainability Work Group to take a lead role in advancing
sustainability throughout the states, DoD, and federal agencies.
ECOS looks to its members, DoD and other federal agencies to commit appropriate resources to
support and fund sustainability initiatives.
ECOS supports the ECOS-DoD Sustainability Work Group in its development of an integrated
strategy for achieving the outcomes and action items from the Forum for a Sustainable Future
within one year following the adoption of this resolution.
ECOS will work with DoD to develop and implement methods that bring together State, DoD,
and other Federal agencies to advance measurable, integrated, environmental stewardship that is
focused on systems-based sustainability and environmental management.
