Department of Recreation Mat Pilates Adult Fitness Call 246-3180 Pilates, a non-impact deep muscle conditioning method, strengthens the body’s “powerhouse” (the abdominal, gluteal and back muscles). According to Joseph Pilates, “Pilates is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, play and work.” By redressing unbalances and altering movement patterns, your body is brought back into balance. This intensive mat workout enhances posture, flexibility, endurance and balance while toning and firming your Powerhouse (core) and can be modified from gentle to challenging, depending on fitness level and goals. Wear comfortable clothing, and bring a mat and light weights. Sliding granite stones to a circular target combines skill of “delivery” with the aerobic exercise of “sweeping”. Join this class and learn basic skills with broom and stone and advanced techniques from Club instructors. Discover why this is known as “chess on ice”. OPEN TO men and women of age 18 or older. The lessons are flexible to fit your ability and interest. Dress in layers of loose-fitting clothing and bring a separate pair of clean tennis shoes. See why this Olympic game has fascinated Metro Detroiters since 1836.
