October 2008 Dear Parents & Caregivers: This month is a great time for your family to balance food and play! Help your kids make time for both healthy foods and treats. Encouraging your child to enjoy their favorite foods in moderation will help them to eat a larger variety of nutritious foods. Kids can also learn how to balance their time. It is important for children to be physically active for at least 60 minutes every day! Help your child to make time to exercise, by spending less time watching TV and playing video games. This October, teach your child about moderation. Helping them make time for healthy food and active play teaches them good lifestyle practices. Make it your family’s goal this month to balance food and play!
Supermarket Tip:
October is the time when supermarkets are packed with all kinds of sweet treats and Halloween candy! In order to help your family balance food and play, try these tips: • Don’t overdo it! Stick with one kind of candy and buy only enough to last for the holiday. If you buy too much, you’ll have lots of leftovers at home. • Look for healthier options! Enjoy your favorite treats in moderation, but be sure to include some healthy foods as well. Candy isn’t the only thing in season, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables are also available!
