High Time Commitment
Regular Tutor/Mentor: Work one-on-one with a child during the academic school year. Most tutoring sessions run from 6:15pm to 8 pm, each meeting one night per week. In addition to weekly tutoring, mentors are required to take their student on one enrichment activity a month. They must also attend 2 trainings or reflection sessions a year and ride the van/bus twice a semester. All tutors are required to commit to at least one year of service. Site Coordinator: Volunteer Site Coordinators help manage and improve our tutoring sites under the supervision of an Academic Case Manager. The Site Coordinator would need to commit to at least one year of service and serve approximately three to four hours per week. This is an excellent opportunity for someone considering a career in education, non-profit program management or someone who might be interested in joining the Northstar staff.
Medium Time Commitment
Substitute Tutor: Those who cannot make the commitment required of regular tutors/mentors, but would still like to work with our students. This position also requires attendance of 2 trainings/reflection sessions and riding the van/bus twice a semester. Bus/Van Rider: This is a great volunteer opportunity for those interested in working with many children at a time. Adult bus and van riders are needed to help us provide safe and free transportation to and from the tutoring site. We have several volunteers who ride the bus/van and do not tutor because they are not able to make a weekly commitment, but still want to help.
Lowest Time Commitment
Office Help: A great deal of administrative work is involved in coordinating our programs! If you are free during the day and would like to help with general office work (answering phones, mailing tutor applications, maintaining databases, etc.), let us know. Also inform us if you have any special skills or talents such as database management, website administration, graphic design, etc. and would like to use them to help Project Northstar. Special Event Planning: Committees are assembled in the fall and spring each year to help plan events such as the annual Holiday Party, Spring Benefit and Summer Picnic Assessment Volunteer: Volunteer in the fall and spring at any of our six tutoring sites to help guide our students through simple assessments. This is the perfect opportunity for someone who can’t make a long-term commitment. Public Relations: Are you skilled in public relations? Do you have contacts with media outlets, sports teams, or others who could help us spread the word about Project Northstar and the communities we serve?
