File View and Search Capabilities
using Net Express IDE

File view and Search capabilities of the Net Express IDE with GDT data files.

Similar to the GDTMAINT tool under GDT, the Net Express IDE can give you similar
functionality:




First, we will start up the Net Express IDE. We will Select the File menu and select
NEW Record Layout. We need to build the record layout for the file we need to view the
contents of. Press OK.

Now you need to select a COBOL program that has been compiled to a .idy (Debug
Format) and contains the fd and select for the file you need to view the contents of.




We will select the ADDRESS.IDY file.

Now you are presented in the Left Pane, the Structures from the ADDRESS.CBL
program. We will now drag the 01 ADDRESS-RECORD to the Right Pane (Record
Layout Pane).

You will be asked, if you are going to used the Default Layout with no conditions needed
for your view or if you are going to have a Conditional Layout.
A record layout file can have one default record layout and none, one or more conditional
record layouts. We will leave this as a Default Layout. Press Next.

We now have the layout we need for the EMPLOYEE.DAT file.
Now we need to save this Layout file. Select File Save as.




The Layout will be saved as ADDRESS.STR.

Now we want to OPEN the data file that we will be using against this Layout.

We will do a FILE OPEN




The File type will be a Data File.

We will select the EMPLOYEE file.

The file contents is displayed. Now we want to OPEN the file layout we just defined to
go with this data file.

We select the ADDRESS.STR (file layout).




Now you are given a record by record display.

Clicking on the value of a field within the record will allow you to change the value.




As soon as you try to make the change of the value of a field, this warning will pop up.
You can turn this off.

You can see that the change of 2684 to 2784 in the Add1 field immediately takes place.

Select default record type and Press OK.




We will enter in the KEY for the record.

We are creating the new record with KEY of 0010.
Press OK.




Record is inserted and ready for you to fill in the field values.

Enter a unique key.
If you enter one that already exist, following message pops up

Press OK after entering a unique key.




New record was added with Record Key 10 detail information.

DELETE A RECORD

Again this warning window will come up. This can be turned off.




Record key 11 has been removed.

INITIALIZE FIELD

SELECT A FIELD AND PRESS Ctrl-F7




We selected the INFOSOL-ADD2 field and pressed Ctrl-F7, the field is initialized.

Enter number of records to delete. We select 2.

Position yourself at the first record you will delete. The delete will delete that record and
the next record.

DATAFILE FIND AND REPLACE




We want to find any records that contain WILLOW in position 36 to 65.
Make sure you are positioned at the beginning of the file.
